  • Cost-Effective: Sodium is far more abundant in nature than lithium, making it cheaper to mine and produce. Studies suggest Sodium-Ion batteries could be 20 to 40 percent less expensive to manufacture than their Lithium-Ion counterparts.
  • Safer: Sodium-Ion batteries are more thermally stable, meaning they’re less likely to catch fire or enter thermal runaway—a common concern with Lithium-Ion batteries.
  • Eco-Friendly: Sodium is easier to source and has a lower environmental impact compared to lithium mining.
  • Zero-Charge Shipping: Sodium-Ion batteries can be shipped at zero charge, reducing the risk of fire during transport.

Cons:

  • Energy Density: Lithium-Ion batteries still hold an edge in energy density, which translates to better mileage per charge. Changan’s A06, for example, tops out at around 250 miles, which is on par with many Lithium-Ion EVs but falls short of some high-end models.

The Road Ahead

While Sodium-Ion batteries may not yet match Lithium-Ion in terms of energy density, their potential advantages are too significant to ignore. As automakers like Changan continue to refine the technology, it’s only a matter of time before Sodium-Ion becomes the standard in the EV industry.

The question is no longer if Sodium-Ion will replace Lithium-Ion, but when. With its cost-effectiveness, safety, and environmental benefits, Sodium-Ion could very well be the key to unlocking the next era of electric vehicles.
