Former Tesla product manager wants to make luxury goods impossible to fake, starting with a chip
Veritas Unveils “Hack-Proof” Chip to Combat $30 Billion Luxury Counterfeit Crisis
In an era where luxury brands hemorrhage over $30 billion annually to counterfeit goods, and the booming $210 billion second-hand market leaves buyers guessing about authenticity, a Silicon Valley startup claims to have engineered the ultimate solution. Veritas, founded by tech-art hybrid Luci Holland, has developed a custom chip it says is impervious to even sophisticated hacking tools like the Flipper Zero—a device notorious for bypassing wireless security systems.
The “Superfake” Epidemic That’s Crippling Luxury Retail
The counterfeit problem has evolved far beyond cheap knockoffs. Today’s “superfakes” are virtually indistinguishable from genuine articles, complete with convincing logos, packaging, and even forged certificates of authenticity. Some luxury brands have reportedly stopped authenticating products at certain locations because the fakes have become too convincing to reliably detect.
Holland, who brings a unique blend of artistic sensibility and technical expertise to the challenge, witnessed this crisis firsthand. Her background spans mixed media painting, metal sculpture, technical product management at Tesla, and various roles in business development and product management at tech companies and venture funds.
“When I think of counterfeiting and I think of the most iconic and legacy brands—many of which have been around for over 100 or 150 years—these brands deserve the most advanced protection to safeguard their designs,” Holland explained.
The Technology: Where Art Meets Unbreakable Security
Veritas’s solution combines custom hardware with sophisticated software in a way the company claims is truly innovative. The chip itself is remarkably unobtrusive—about the size of a small gem—allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into products without compromising design integrity. Even better, it can be inserted after manufacturing, meaning brands don’t need to redesign their production processes.
The chip employs NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, the same system that powers contactless payments. Consumers can simply tap their smartphones against an item to verify its authenticity instantly. But the real security magic lies beneath the surface.
Veritas developed a custom coil and bridge structure that renders the chip dormant if tampering is detected. When compromised, the chip essentially goes dark, hiding all product-related codes. On the software side, the system connects to Veritas’s backend, which monitors scanning patterns to detect and prevent fraudulent activity. The company also creates blockchain-based digital twins of products, enabling everything from digital art gallery exhibitions to metaverse experiences.
Beyond Authentication: Building Brand Communities
While stopping counterfeiters is the primary goal, Veritas’s platform offers luxury brands additional value. The software suite allows companies to manage all chipped products, add team members for administration, and enrich product information with storytelling elements. Brands are using these features to deepen customer engagement through exclusive invitations, early access to new collections, and other community-building initiatives.
The company has been deliberately vague about specific brand partnerships, but the potential applications span the entire luxury ecosystem—from high-end fashion houses to jewelry makers and beyond.
The Education Challenge: Why Brands Still Use Vulnerable Solutions
Despite the clear threat, Holland notes that many brands continue to rely on vulnerable authentication methods. Standard NFC chips, which are widely deployed across the industry, can be easily bypassed by determined counterfeiters. This persistence of outdated technology stems partly from a lack of awareness about the sophistication of modern counterfeiting operations.
“It is shocking to see that some of the off-the-shelf solutions, like NFC chips that brands are using, are actually so vulnerable and could easily be bypassed,” Holland said. “This is the one thing most people don’t know, and we want to educate the ecosystem to adopt safer solutions.”
Silicon Valley Backs the Anti-Counterfeiting Revolution
Veritas has secured $1.75 million in pre-seed funding led by Seven Seven Six, with participation from notable investors including DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang, skincare brand Rey’s co-founder Gloria Zhu, and former TechCrunch editor Josh Constine. The company plans to use these funds to expand its current two-person team.
Seven Seven Six founder Alexis Ohanian was drawn to Holland’s unique combination of design sensibility and technical expertise. He views the counterfeit battle as an “arms race” but remains confident in technology’s ability to prevail.
“It’s absolutely an arms race [against fake goods makers], but we’re used to fighting those and consistently winning in tech—and luxury brands need all the help they can get,” Ohanian said.
The Road Ahead: Scaling Security for Legacy Brands
As Veritas moves forward, the challenge will be scaling its technology across the diverse landscape of luxury goods while maintaining the delicate balance between security and aesthetics. The company’s success could fundamentally reshape how authenticity is verified in the luxury market, potentially saving brands billions while giving consumers unprecedented confidence in their purchases.
For an industry built on exclusivity, craftsmanship, and heritage, Veritas offers something equally precious: peace of mind in an increasingly uncertain marketplace.
