Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold hands on: key improvements and one flaw
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: A Deeper Dive into the Latest Foldable
The folding phone market is heating up, and Google has just entered the fray with its latest offering, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This device builds upon the success of its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but with a few key differences that set it apart from the competition.
A Familiar Design with a New Twist
At first glance, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks very similar to last year’s model. It retains the same sleek design, with a 6.4-inch Actua display on the outside and an 8-inch main display on the inside. However, there are a few notable changes under the hood.
Thicker and Heavier, But More Durable
One of the most significant changes is the device’s thickness and weight. While most of its competitors, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, have gone for a slimmer and lighter design, Google has opted to make the Pixel 10 Pro Fold slightly thicker and heavier. The device measures 5.2mm thick when unfolded and 10.8mm when folded, compared to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s 5.1mm and 10.5mm, respectively. It also weighs 258 grams, which is one gram heavier than its predecessor and 43 grams heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
While this may seem like a step backward, Google has focused on improving the device’s durability. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold boasts full IP68 dust and water resistance, which is a first for a folding phone. The hinge has also been improved, with Google claiming it can handle over ten years of folding.
Flagship Hardware and Performance
Under the hood, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is powered by Google’s new Tensor G5 processor, which marks a significant upgrade from the Tensor G4 used in the previous model. The Tensor G5 is built on a 3nm process and is custom-designed for the latest advancements in Google Gemini. It features a 34% faster CPU and a 60% more powerful TPU, which should result in vastly improved performance and on-device AI capabilities.
The device also comes with 16GB of RAM and a 5,015mAh battery, which is almost eight percent larger than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It supports 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging, thanks to Google’s new PixelSnap charging solution.
Camera and Software Features
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold retains the same triple camera setup as its predecessor, with a 48MP wide camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide camera, and a 10.8MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. While these specs are on par with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung’s device features a 200MP main camera, which could give it an edge in photography.
On the software side, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes with a host of new Gemini, AI, and software features. These include MagicCue, which provides contextual suggestions based on your usage patterns, and a new Daily Hub that offers a personalized digest of upcoming events and other pertinent information. The device also features real-time translation of voice calls and improvements to call screening and other Gemini-powered features.
A Strong Contender, But With a Caveat
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a strong contender in the folding phone market, with its flagship hardware, improved durability, and new software features. However, its increased thickness and weight may be a drawback for some users, especially when compared to slimmer and lighter devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Ultimately, the decision to choose the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will depend on your priorities. If you value durability, performance, and Google’s software ecosystem, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is an excellent choice. However, if you prioritize a slim and lightweight design, you may want to consider other options.
