Google rolls out new Gemini capabilities to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive
Google Supercharges Workspace with Gemini: AI That Writes, Designs, and Analyzes for You
Google has just dropped a bombshell on the productivity world, announcing a sweeping suite of AI-powered enhancements to its Workspace apps—Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive—powered by its Gemini model. The goal? To transform these everyday tools from static platforms into dynamic, intelligent collaborators that can draft, design, analyze, and organize your work with minimal input.
“Help Me Create”: AI-Powered Drafting That Feels Like Magic
The centerpiece of this update is a new “Help me create” tool in Google Docs. Instead of staring at a blank page, users can now simply describe what they want—say, “draft a newsletter for our neighborhood association using the meeting minutes from my January HOA meeting and the list of upcoming events”—and Gemini will scour your Gmail, Chat, and Drive to pull in relevant context and generate a fully formatted first draft.
But Google isn’t stopping at the first draft. Once you have something on the page, Gemini can help you refine specific sections without regenerating the entire document. Need more clarity? Want to add details? Just ask. There’s also a new “Match writing style” feature that unifies tone and voice across collaborative documents, and a “Match the format” tool that lets you mirror the structure of another document—perfect for turning a travel itinerary template into a personalized plan by pulling in your flight confirmations, hotel bookings, and rental car reservations.
Sheets Gets a Brain: From Data Entry to Data Intelligence
In Google Sheets, Gemini is evolving from a simple formula assistant to a true collaborative partner. With a single prompt, it can pull relevant data from across your Gmail, Chat, and Drive to create a fully formatted spreadsheet. Imagine asking it to “organize my upcoming move to Chicago. Create a checklist for packing by room, a contact list for utilities, and a spreadsheet to track moving company quotes from my inbox.” Done.
For more complex tasks, the new “Fill with Gemini” tool can populate tables instantly. It can generate custom text, categorize and summarize data, or even pull in real-time information from Google Search. Managing college applications? Set up column headers for deadlines, tuition, and other details, and let Gemini fill in the table automatically by scraping the web.
Slides That Design Themselves
Google Slides is getting a major upgrade with the ability to generate fully editable slides that match your deck’s theme, drawing on context from your files, emails, and the web. Don’t like a slide? Ask Gemini to adjust it—”match the colors to the rest of my deck” or “make this more minimal.” In the future, you’ll be able to create an entire presentation from a single prompt, like “create a 5-slide deck for my upcoming Tokyo trip.”
Drive Becomes Your Personal Knowledge Base
Google is reimagining Drive as more than just a storage locker. Now, when you search using natural language, Gemini surfaces an “AI Overview” at the top of your results—similar to the summaries you see on Google Search. This overview pulls together the most relevant information from your files, citing sources so you don’t have to open each document to find what you need.
The new “Ask Gemini in Drive” feature takes this further, letting you ask complex questions across your documents, emails, calendar, and the web. For example, select all your tax-related files and ask, “What should I ask my tax advisor before filing this year’s taxes?” and get a detailed, data-driven answer.
Availability and Rollout
All these features are rolling out today in beta, but there’s a catch: they’ll first be available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. They’re available in English worldwide for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and in the U.S. for Drive.
