Google’s AI-Powered Shield: Android App Ecosystem Sees Sharp Drop in Malicious Apps

In a major win for mobile security, Google has revealed that its AI-driven defenses are successfully pushing malicious actors away from the Google Play Store. The tech giant’s latest Android app ecosystem safety report shows a dramatic decline in policy-violating apps, with only 1.75 million blocked in 2025—down from 2.36 million in 2024 and 2.28 million in 2023. While Play Store threats are declining, Android’s built-in defense system, Google Play Protect, identified over 27 million new malicious apps from outside the official store in 2025—up from 13 million in 2024 and just 5 million in 2023. This surge suggests that cybercriminals are adapting their tactics, increasingly targeting users through sideloaded apps and third-party app stores.
