Google’s Gemini 3 Release Won Over More Than 100 Million New Active Users
Google’s Gemini App Surges Past 750 Million Monthly Users as AI Rivalry Heats Up
Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, has reached a staggering milestone of over 750 million monthly active users, according to CEO Sundar Pichai during Alphabet’s fourth-quarter earnings call. This marks a significant leap from the 650 million users reported just three months prior in the company’s third-quarter earnings, released shortly before the revolutionary Gemini 3 debut that reshaped the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence.
“We are also seeing significantly higher engagement per user, especially since the launch of Gemini 3,” Pichai emphasized. “It has seen the fastest adoption of any model in our history.”
The dramatic turnaround in Google’s AI fortunes can be traced back to mid-November 2024, when Gemini 3 launched to widespread acclaim. The model’s capabilities sparked enthusiastic praise across social media platforms, with even long-time ChatGPT advocates like Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff publicly declaring their conversion to Gemini. AI benchmarking firm LMArena’s cofounder Wei-Lin Chiang characterized the release as “more than a leaderboard shuffle,” signaling a fundamental shift in the AI race.
The impact of Gemini 3 was so profound that just weeks later, OpenAI reportedly declared “code red” within the company. Even Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose company maintains substantial business relationships with OpenAI, reportedly expressed concerns about the competitive threat Google now poses to OpenAI’s market dominance.
Despite this impressive growth trajectory, Google still faces a considerable challenge in surpassing ChatGPT’s user base. While OpenAI doesn’t regularly disclose ChatGPT’s active user data, a December report from The Information suggested ChatGPT was approaching 900 million weekly active users at that time.
Google’s resurgence represents a remarkable recovery for a company whose AI reputation had been severely damaged following the problematic launch of Gemini’s image generation capabilities in early 2024. The failed launch prompted Alphabet co-founder Sergey Brin to acknowledge that “Google definitely messed up” with the feature, which produced historically inaccurate and problematic image outputs.
“I think we are in a very, very relentless innovation cadence, and I think we are confident about maintaining that momentum as we go through ’26,” Pichai stated during the earnings call. Executives revealed plans to double capital expenditures in 2026, with the majority allocated to AI development.
The company has ambitious plans for Gemini throughout 2025. Apple recently selected Gemini to power its AI-enhanced Siri experience, slated for release later this year. Samsung announced intentions to double the number of mobile devices featuring Gemini integration, aiming for 800 million units by 2026. Google is also developing more “shoppable” experiences within the Gemini app, incorporating checkout functionality directly into conversations.
While advertising within Gemini conversations remains on the horizon, Google executives emphasize a measured approach. “Ads have always been part of scaling products to reach billions of people,” noted Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler. “But as we’ve said, we’re not rushing anything here.”
The AI landscape continues to evolve at breakneck speed, with Google’s Gemini emerging as a formidable challenger to OpenAI’s ChatGPT dominance. As both companies race to innovate and capture market share, users stand to benefit from increasingly sophisticated and capable AI assistants that are becoming deeply integrated into everyday digital experiences.
