This hybrid phishing scheme—blending old-school mail with modern QR code scams—has security experts sounding the alarm.

From Inbox to Mailbox: A New Delivery Method

Traditionally, phishing attacks arrive via email, laced with malicious links or attachments. But this latest campaign skips the inbox entirely. Victims are receiving official-looking envelopes that appear to come from well-known hardware wallet brands like Trezor and Ledger. Inside, recipients find urgent notices claiming they must complete an “Authentication Check” or “Transaction Check” to avoid losing access to their wallets.

The letters include a QR code and a looming deadline—some extending into early 2026—to create a false sense of urgency. Scanning the code directs users to a fake website designed to mimic the brand’s official setup page.

Credential Harvesting via Snail Mail

Once on the fraudulent site, victims are prompted to enter their wallet’s recovery phrase—a string of 12, 20, or 24 words that acts as the master key to their crypto funds. This information is then transmitted to attackers via a backend API, giving them full control over the victim’s wallet.
