These facilities don’t just consume electricity; they require substantial water resources, primarily for cooling systems. The water usage is staggering—ranging from 100 million to 1.8 billion gallons annually for data centers as a whole. This figure doesn’t even account for indirect water usage, such as the water needed to generate electricity or manufacture the chips that run these AI systems.

The Variable Nature of AI Water Use

Unlike traditional computing tasks, AI queries vary dramatically in complexity. A simple question about the weather requires far less computational power than generating a detailed image or analyzing complex data. Regional Variations and Task Complexity

A particularly revealing study titled “A Water Efficiency Dataset for African Data Centers,” also published in Communications of the ACM in 2025, examined how task complexity affects water usage. The researchers found that asking GPT-4 to write a 10-page report could consume up to 14 gallons of water—enough to fill a small bucket. Even a medium-length email of 120-200 words could require up to 0.68 gallons.

For comparison, the open-source model Llama-3-70B used significantly less water for the same tasks: 0.16 gallons for a 10-page report and just 4 fluid ounces for a medium-length email.

Google’s Transparency and the Bigger Picture

Google has been somewhat more transparent about its AI water usage. The company revealed that each Gemini prompt uses an average of 0.26 ml of water—roughly five drops. However, without knowing how many prompts Gemini handles daily, this statistic provides limited insight into the overall environmental impact.

The Growing Concern

As AI chatbots become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, their water footprint is becoming a pressing environmental concern. The technology industry’s rapid adoption of AI models means that water consumption by data centers is likely to increase substantially in the coming years.
