“We do a lot of work around analysing the questionnaires typically used in mental health during screening to see if these can be shortened,” he explains. While generative AI models like ChatGPT have made headlines for both their capabilities and their dangers—including a recent lawsuit alleging that ChatGPT encouraged a man with mental illness to harm himself and his mother—van de Ven’s approach minimizes these risks through careful constraint and oversight.
“As it stands, we cannot guarantee how a generative model will respond to a prompt and for this reason such use requires further research and careful testing before it can become mainstream,” he cautions. “Although any AI model can cause harm just like most other technologies, the simple models we develop help with a very narrow task and often do so in a way that can be understood by a clinician. As a result, their capability to do harm is limited and well understood.”
Personae Project: A Three-Tier Revolution in Online Therapy
Perhaps the most ambitious manifestation of van de Ven’s research is the Personae project, a collaborative effort that positions the University of Limerick as the sole non-Danish partner in developing a revolutionary approach to online mental health services. The project adapts an existing Danish online mental health platform to a “stepped care model” that could fundamentally alter how therapy is delivered.
This innovative model operates across three distinct levels of patient engagement:
Level One: Self-Directed Support – Patients access fully automated resources and interventions without direct therapist involvement, ideal for those with mild symptoms or those taking initial steps toward mental health support.
Level Two: Blended Care – A hybrid approach combining self-directed treatment with scheduled online sessions with therapists, offering flexibility while maintaining human connection.

“The expectation is that this stepped-care approach will result in more efficient use of healthcare resources and thus an opportunity to treat more people with the available resources,” van de Ven explains. “Down the line, the hope is that our models can also inform what step in the stepped care model a patient should receive,” he adds, highlighting the potential for AI to not just streamline existing processes but to actively guide treatment decisions.

After two years of intensive development, the Personae project has reached a critical milestone with the launch of its trial phase. Van de Ven and his collaborators eagerly anticipate the influx of real-world data that will allow them to refine their AI models further and validate their approach.
Looking toward the future, van de Ven remains both optimistic and cautious about AI’s role in mental healthcare. “I’m hopeful that we can do right by mental health patients and their loved ones by improving the services provided to them,” he says. “Internet interventions and AI will play an important role in this process, but AI is very much a double-edged sword.”
