I Switched Password Managers Without Losing a Single Login—Here’s How
TL;DR: Switching password managers is easier than you think. Export your passwords to a CSV file, import them into your new manager, configure the settings, and then delete your old app. Follow this guide to migrate seamlessly.
I’ve been using 1Password for years after migrating from RoboForm, but with recent price increases, I—like many others—started considering alternatives. Maybe you’re in the same boat: unhappy with your current manager, or looking to upgrade from a free/basic version to something more robust like 1Password, NordPass, or Bitwarden.
Whatever your reason, switching doesn’t have to be painful. Here’s exactly how I did it without losing a single login.
Step 1: Install Your New Password Manager
Before doing anything else, download and install your new password manager on your computer. Create your account and make sure you can sign in properly.
You’ll also need to install the browser extensions. Find them in:
- Chrome Web Store for Google Chrome
- Firefox Add-Ons for Firefox
- Edge Add-Ons for Microsoft Edge
Step 2: Export Your Passwords from Your Current Manager
Most password managers allow you to export your data as a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file. Here’s how:
- Go to Settings in your current password manager
- Look for an Export command
- You’ll likely be prompted to enter your master password
- Choose the CSV option and save the file to your PC
⚠️ Important: CSV files store your passwords in plain text and aren’t encrypted by default. Keep the file on your PC only—don’t save it online or in vulnerable locations.
Step 3: Import Your Passwords into the New Manager
Now it’s time to bring your data over:
- In your new password manager, go to Settings
- Look for the Import command
- If your current manager appears in the list, you might be able to do a direct transfer
- Otherwise, select the CSV option and choose your exported file
Depending on the new manager, you might be taken to an online import tool. Ensure the program promises to keep your unencrypted data private and on your device.
Step 4: Review and Organize Your Imported Data
Once imported, you’ll see your records:
- The password manager should automatically match data fields to the correct categories
- You may need to assign labels for each column (site name, URL, username, password)
- You can choose to ignore columns with unnecessary data
Review everything to ensure accuracy before proceeding.
Step 5: Configure Your New Password Manager
Now configure all the settings in your new manager:
- Review each setting and activate or change as needed
- Try to replicate your previous setup as closely as possible
- Check browser extensions and mobile apps if you use them
Step 6: Clean Up Your Old Password Manager
Once you’ve confirmed everything works properly:
- Sign in to your old password manager (on PC or online)
- Delete all passwords and stored data
- Uninstall the old application
This ensures your sensitive information isn’t lingering in an unused app.
Final Thoughts
Switching password managers might seem daunting, but by following these steps methodically, you can migrate all your logins without losing access to any account. The key is taking your time with the export/import process and double-checking everything before deleting your old manager.
