I tested the JLab giant headphone speakers. I have opinions!
JLab Blue XL Speaker Headphones: The World’s Largest Wearable Speakers Are Here
The wearable tech revolution has taken some truly bizarre turns, but JLab’s latest creation might just be the strangest yet. Meet the Blue XL Speaker Headphones – a $100 monstrosity that blurs the line between headphones and portable Bluetooth speakers in the most ridiculous way possible.
A Design That Defies Logic
When I first unboxed these behemoths, I couldn’t help but laugh. My 5-year-old son burst into giggles, asking “what the heck is that?” even my wife had the same reaction. These aren’t just large headphones – they’re practically wearable furniture.
Weighing in at a staggering 3.25 pounds (52 ounces), the Blue XL Speaker Headphones feel like you’re wearing a small dumbbell around your neck. The earcups are so massive they could double as dinner plates, and the overall footprint is so enormous that finding a proper place to store them becomes a legitimate challenge.
The Usability Nightmare
Here’s where things get truly problematic. These speakers demand specific positioning – the earcups must face outward to deliver proper sound. Try hanging them on a headphone stand? Forget it. They’re too long and unstable, creating a setup that looks like something from a comedy sketch.
JLab suggests placing them on a table, but they don’t specify how to position them correctly. The heavy reverberation they produce on certain surfaces is another issue they conveniently don’t mention. No IP rating means no outdoor use in questionable weather, and the lack of app support means you’re stuck with whatever sound profile JLab decided on.
Sound Quality: Surprisingly Decent
Despite the absurdity of the design, the audio performance is actually impressive. Each earcup houses a 2.5-inch driver with passive radiators that deliver incredibly loud audio with powerful bass response. If you’re into Afro punk, EDM, hip-hop, or rock, you’ll likely enjoy what you hear.
However, there are significant compromises. Vocal performances and high-range sounds (6 kHz to 20 kHz) are noticeably subdued. Sibilance becomes a real problem with dialogue-heavy content – those ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘z’, and ‘ch’ sounds can be harsh and grating. And forget about true stereo sound; these speakers don’t support JLab’s LabSync technology for pairing multiple units.
The Call Quality Catastrophe
Want to use these as a speakerphone? Think again. The Blue XL Speaker Headphones completely lack this functionality, which seems like a bizarre omission for a product that’s essentially a wearable speaker system.
Battery Life: A Silver Lining
On the positive side, you get up to 20 hours of battery life per charge, which is more than most similarly priced standalone speakers offer. The multifunctional dial is distinctive and works well, and the overall build quality is solid.
The April Fool’s Theory
Let’s be honest – these feel like an elaborate April Fool’s joke that JLab decided to actually produce. They’re the kind of product that raises questions leading to disappointing answers. No one is going to wear these outside unless they’re actively seeking negative attention. The responses you’d get wouldn’t be flattering.
Pricing and Availability
At $100, these are positioned as an impulse purchase or novelty gift. However, they’re currently out of stock on JLab’s website, and resellers on eBay are asking twice the retail price. That’s a hard pass for what amounts to an expensive gag gift.
The Verdict
The Blue XL Speaker Headphones are exactly what they appear to be: a hilarious novelty that’s fun to show off for about five minutes before the practical limitations become painfully obvious. They’re not ideal as wireless headphones or speakers, and you really have to stretch your imagination to find legitimate use cases.
JLab has built its reputation on low pricing and filling niche markets, but this might be their most ambitious (and questionable) creation yet. The Blue XL Speaker Headphones are a limited-edition release that draws more “umms” than “oohs” – and that’s being generous.
