OpenAI and Jony Ive’s AI Hardware Vision: A Smart Speaker That Sees, Listens, and Predicts

In a bold leap toward the next generation of AI-powered hardware, OpenAI is collaborating with legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive to craft a suite of intelligent devices that could redefine how humans interact with artificial intelligence. According to exclusive reporting from The Information, the first of these ambitious products—a smart speaker—is slated for a launch as early as February 2027.

This isn’t just another voice-activated speaker. OpenAI’s forthcoming device is rumored to feature an integrated camera, facial recognition capabilities akin to Apple’s Face ID, and advanced contextual awareness designed to observe users and anticipate their needs. The company envisions a product that not only responds to commands but actively suggests actions to help users achieve their goals—whether that’s recommending an earlier bedtime before a morning meeting or prompting you to restock groceries based on observed patterns.

The hardware development is being spearheaded by Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, which OpenAI acquired in May 2025. This partnership unites two of the most influential minds in tech—Ive, the design maestro behind the iPhone and MacBook, and Sam Altman, the visionary CEO of OpenAI. Together, they’ve hinted at a device that is “peaceful,” “joyful,” and an “active participant” in users’ lives—eschewing traditional screens in favor of a more ambient, intuitive interface.

The smart speaker is expected to be priced between $200 and $300, positioning it as a premium yet accessible entry into the AI hardware market. Beyond the speaker, OpenAI is also exploring a smart lamp and AI-powered glasses, though these are not expected until 2028 or later. The company’s hardware ambitions, however, are still in early stages, and some products may ultimately be shelved.

Interestingly, OpenAI isn’t the only tech giant eyeing the smart home hub space. Apple is also developing a similar device with an integrated camera and speaker, designed for video calls and deep integration with Siri’s next-generation AI capabilities. Yet, the road to innovation is not without its challenges. Internal sources reveal tension between OpenAI’s engineers and LoveFrom’s design team, with complaints about LoveFrom’s secrecy and slow pace of revisions. Former Apple designer Evans Hankey is leading industrial design, while Ive himself is making the final call on nearly all design decisions. The team also includes other Apple alumni like Tang Tan and Scott Cannon, as well as Adam Cue, son of Apple executive Eddy Cue, who is working on OpenAI’s software.

As the tech world eagerly awaits the unveiling of OpenAI’s first AI hardware, the collaboration between Ive and Altman promises to push the boundaries of what intelligent devices can do—potentially ushering in a new era where AI is not just a tool, but a seamless, proactive presence in our daily lives.
