Laurie Spiegel on the difference between algorithmic music and ‘AI’
Laurie Spiegel’s Music Mouse: The Legendary Algorithmic Music Tool Returns After 40 Years
In 1986, electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel introduced Music Mouse, an innovative algorithmic music creation tool that allowed users to compose complex melodies and harmonies simply by moving a computer mouse. Now, 40 years later, Music Mouse is being reborn for modern machines with the help of audio technology company Eventide.
Spiegel, already an accomplished composer with her 1980 album The Expanding Universe considered among the greatest ambient records of all time, was deeply drawn to algorithmic music composition and the emerging home computer. Her creation, which she calls an “intelligent instrument,” restricts users to particular scales but enables exploration through simple mouse movements.
The original Music Mouse was available for purchase until 2021 but never updated beyond Mac OS 9. The new version, developed in collaboration with Eventide, maintains the core functionality of the 1980s original while adding enhanced MIDI features and a more robust sound engine based on Spiegel’s own Yamaha DX7 patches.
In an exclusive interview, Spiegel discussed the origins of Music Mouse, her views on algorithmic composition versus generative AI, and why she considers the computer a “folk instrument.” She emphasizes that Music Mouse is not a generative algorithm but rather a musical instrument played by a person, designed to make note-playing easier so users can focus on phrasing and form.
Spiegel also shared her thoughts on the evolving landscape of music technology, expressing both excitement and concern about the proliferation of AI-generated music. She believes that while computers can generate music-like material, true musical expression comes from within human beings as personal communication and documentation of feeling.
The new version of Music Mouse is available for macOS and Windows 11 for $29, offering musicians and enthusiasts the opportunity to experience this legendary tool that has influenced electronic music for decades.
