Making US foldables feel ancient
HONOR Magic V6 Hands-On: A Foldable That Redefines the Game
When it comes to foldable smartphones, I’ve always had a checklist. Thin and lightweight? Check. No annoying display crease? Check. Flagship-grade specs that can handle anything? Check. HONOR claims it’s nailed all of these with the new Magic V6, and after spending a few days with the device at MWC 2026, I can confidently say they’re onto something big.
The Best Foldable Hardware I’ve Ever Used
Let’s start with the design. The HONOR Magic V6 is a masterclass in foldable engineering. At just 9.0mm thick when folded (4.1mm unfolded) and weighing 224 grams, it’s as slim and light as you could hope for. For comparison, it’s about the same thickness as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and only nine grams heavier. It feels like a traditional slab phone when folded, which is something I can’t say for the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
But HONOR didn’t stop there. The red model I tested has a soft-touch back that feels like suede, with an intricate pattern that’s unlike anything I’ve seen on a phone. Gold accents on the frame and camera bump add a touch of luxury. It’s bold, it’s stylish, and it’s undeniably eye-catching.
The hinge mechanism is another standout feature. While it doesn’t lock into as many viewing angles as I’d like, the virtually creaseless inner display more than makes up for it. Both Samsung and Google’s latest foldables have noticeable creases, but the Magic V6’s display is smooth as glass. And let’s not forget the IP68 and IP69 ratings—HONOR has made the Magic V6 the first foldable to achieve both, offering unmatched durability.
A Battery That Defies Logic
Now, let’s talk about the battery. The HONOR Magic V6 packs a 6,660mAh battery. Yes, you read that right. In a phone this thin and light, that’s nothing short of miraculous. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 4,400mAh battery, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has 5,015mAh—both thicker and heavier than the Magic V6.
While I haven’t had the device long enough for a full battery test, it’s already delivering two days of light-to-moderate use on a single charge. That’s better than any foldable I’ve used before, and it’s a testament to HONOR’s engineering prowess.
The rest of the specs are equally impressive. The Magic V6 features 80W wired charging, 66W wireless charging, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. The camera system is no slouch either, with a 50MP primary camera, 64MP periscope telephoto, and a 50MP ultrawide lens.
US Foldables Need to Step It Up
If it sounds like I’m gushing, it’s because I am. The HONOR Magic V6 is one of the best foldables I’ve ever used. It checks every box on my list and then some. The only downside? It’s not coming to the US. HONOR, like other Chinese brands such as HUAWEI, OPPO, and vivo, has been consistently outpacing US foldable options. And the Magic V6 is proof that the gap is only widening.
Samsung and Google have made significant strides with their foldables, but HONOR’s latest offering shows there’s still room for innovation. The Magic V6 is launching in China next month, with global availability expected in the second half of the year. Here’s hoping US brands are taking notes.
