Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection delivers a delightful twist on the classic Monster Hunter formula, transforming the high-octane action into a charming turn-based RPG experience. Set in the peaceful kingdom of Azuria, you play as the prince or princess and leader of the Rangers, tasked with protecting the realm and its creatures. What begins as a routine mission quickly spirals into a complex tale of political intrigue, mysterious crystal infections turning monsters feral, and a personal journey of discovery.

The game starts slow, with heavy exposition and time-consuming tutorials that may frustrate veteran Monster Hunter Stories players. However, newcomers will appreciate the thorough onboarding. Once past the initial hump, Twisted Reflection reveals its true colors: a heartfelt story about friendship, duty, and the bonds between humans and monsters.

Combat That Clicks: Rock, Paper, Scissors with Teeth

The standout feature is the attack type system, a clever adaptation of the mainline series’ combat. During battles, you and your monsters face off against foes in a tense head-to-head where correctly guessing whether to use Power, Technical, or Speed attacks determines victory or defeat. Choose correctly, and you boost your damage; choose poorly, and you’ll take increased punishment. This risk-reward mechanic keeps battles engaging throughout the 50+ hour campaign.

You’ll control yourself and one monster in battle, sharing hearts (health pools), while AI companions from your Ranger squad provide support. Each ally specializes in different roles—Thea offers higher critical hit rates but lower defense, while Gaul acts as a healer with his utility belt of items. Building the right team composition becomes crucial as you face more challenging opponents.

Crafting with Character: Wear Your Victories

Monster parts aren’t just for upgrading gear—they’re for fashion statements. Crafting weapons and armor from defeated creatures incorporates visual elements from their original forms. Defeat a Kut Kut? Your new gear will sport distinctive orange scales. This attention to detail extends to cutscenes, where your custom outfits appear, sometimes creating unintentionally hilarious visual moments that add personality to the experience.

A World Worth Exploring (Mostly)

Twisted Reflection shines in its creature design and habitat authenticity. Aquatic monsters like the salamander-like Ludthroth naturally inhabit lakes and rivers, while plains feature packs of Velocidrome scavengers. The six monster companions you can ride and train feel genuinely integrated into the ecosystem, requiring you to switch mounts depending on terrain—your winged steed won’t help you dive for underwater herbs.

However, the platforming proves frustrating. Invisible walls appear randomly, and character movement feels imprecise, with frequent falls from edges that shouldn’t be problematic. These technical hiccups break immersion in a game otherwise committed to creating a believable world.

Side Stories That Matter

Beyond the main narrative, side quests and Ranger friendship missions add depth to the world. While standard fetch quests populate the map, the friendship missions stand out with thoughtful writing and character development. These stories flesh out your squadmates—Kora’s tough exterior hides a painful past, while Ogden provides eccentric wisdom as a father figure to the group.

The pacing occasionally stumbles when you’re warped back to previously visited areas for story missions, creating jarring breaks in narrative flow. However, the emotional payoff and spirited voice performances make these journeys worthwhile.

Play it if: You enjoy turn-based RPGs with creature-collecting mechanics, appreciate games that take time to develop characters and world-building, or are new to the Monster Hunter series and want an accessible entry point.

Don’t play it if: You prefer fast-paced action combat, dislike extensive tutorials and exposition, or want a game with perfect technical execution.

Twisted Reflection offers robust accessibility options including customizable controls, adjustable subtitle sizes, font options for dialogue, and various combat assists like hint messages for difficult battles. The ability to toggle quest markers and minimap rotation provides flexibility for different playstyles.

How We Tested

We completed the main campaign on PC (Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 with RTX 5070) over 50+ hours, exploring side content and habitat rehabilitation features. Gameplay alternated between mouse/keyboard and Xbox Wireless Controller, with internal speakers used for audio.
