OpenAI and Reliance Join Forces to Bring AI-Powered Search to JioHotstar

In a bold move that could redefine how millions of Indian viewers discover and consume entertainment, OpenAI has announced a strategic partnership with Reliance Industries to integrate advanced AI-driven conversational search into JioHotstar, one of India’s largest streaming platforms. This collaboration marks a significant leap in blending artificial intelligence with media consumption, offering users a more intuitive, personalized, and immersive way to navigate the ever-expanding universe of movies, TV shows, and live sports.

The feature, powered by OpenAI’s robust API, will allow JioHotstar users to search for content using natural language text and voice prompts in multiple Indian languages. Whether you’re looking for the latest Bollywood blockbuster, a regional drama, or a live cricket match, the AI will understand your query contextually and deliver tailored recommendations based on your viewing history and preferences. This isn’t just a search tool—it’s a digital concierge designed to anticipate your entertainment needs.

This partnership comes at a time when OpenAI is aggressively expanding its footprint in India, a country that now boasts over 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users. The company plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, complementing its existing office in New Delhi. These moves underscore India’s growing importance as a key market for AI innovation and adoption.

The announcement was made at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the stage with other tech luminaries, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and Google’s Sundar Pichai. The event highlighted India’s rising prominence in the global AI landscape and set the stage for transformative collaborations like this one.

But the innovation doesn’t stop at JioHotstar’s app. In a two-way integration, OpenAI plans to surface JioHotstar recommendations directly within ChatGPT. This means that users who search for entertainment-related queries through ChatGPT will receive contextual suggestions and deep links into JioHotstar’s catalog. It’s a seamless bridge between discovery and consumption, turning casual curiosity into instant engagement.

This move aligns with a broader industry trend where streaming giants are experimenting with conversational interfaces. Netflix, for instance, began testing a generative AI-powered search tool in May 2025, enabling viewers to find content through natural language queries. Similarly, Google introduced Gemini-powered discovery features for its Google TV platform in November 2025. OpenAI’s partnership with Reliance positions it at the forefront of this evolution, setting a new standard for AI-enhanced entertainment.

Fidji Simo, Chief Executive of Applications at OpenAI, emphasized that the partnership aims to bring more personalized AI experiences into entertainment and live sports. By enabling viewers to move “from curiosity to context” through natural interactions, the integration promises to make content discovery more intuitive and engaging than ever before.

Uday Shankar, Vice Chairperson of JioStar, echoed this sentiment, noting that embedding AI into content discovery will reshape how audiences find and engage with programming. The rollout will span both live and on-demand formats, ensuring a consistent and enriched experience across JioHotstar’s vast library.

This collaboration is part of OpenAI’s broader “OpenAI for India” initiative, which seeks to deepen its presence in the South Asian nation through infrastructure, enterprise, and education partnerships. Other key moves under this initiative include collaborations with the Tata Group on AI-ready data centers and enterprise deployments, as well as agreements with Indian companies like Pine Labs, Eternal, and MakeMyTrip. These efforts reflect OpenAI’s commitment to fostering AI innovation tailored to India’s unique needs and opportunities.

As the lines between technology and entertainment continue to blur, partnerships like this one signal a future where AI doesn’t just assist us—it anticipates us. For JioHotstar’s millions of users, the next time they search for something to watch, they might just find that the perfect recommendation was waiting for them all along, powered by the intelligence of OpenAI.
