‘Our consciousness is under siege’: Michael Pollan on chatbots, social media and mental freedom | Well actually
Consciousness Under Siege: Michael Pollan’s Call for a “Consciousness Hygiene”
In his latest book, A World Appears, renowned author and thinker Michael Pollan explores the profound mystery of human consciousness—the private, interior realm where we dream, reflect, and experience the world. But Pollan warns that this sacred space is under attack, besieged by forces that seek to manipulate, distract, and even replace our inner lives.
Each morning, as we wake and return to ourselves, we inhabit a miraculous and mysterious space: our consciousness. It’s where we daydream, ruminate, and form our deepest thoughts and emotions. Yet, Pollan argues, this realm is increasingly polluted by modern intrusions. From the relentless grip of social media algorithms designed to capture our attention to the rise of AI chatbots that simulate companionship, our ability to sit with our thoughts and perceive the world authentically is being eroded.
Pollan’s concept of “consciousness hygiene” is a call to reclaim sovereignty over our minds. He likens it to a practice of mental self-care, a way to draw boundaries around our consciousness and protect it from external manipulation. “It’s about owning the noise,” he explains. “It’s about making it your noise.” This hygiene isn’t about emptying the mind but about taking control of where our attention goes and ensuring it’s not hijacked by algorithms or artificial entities.
One of the most striking aspects of Pollan’s argument is the comparison between human consciousness and the rise of AI. While chatbots and AI systems may mimic human interaction, they lack true consciousness. Yet, their ability to speak in the first person and simulate empathy can easily fool us into forming emotional attachments. Pollan warns that these relationships are not real—they lack the friction and complexity that define human connections. “In every human relationship, even a loving one, there’s friction,” he says. “That friction is what helps us define our identities and realize what we think. You don’t get that with a chatbot; they suck up to you.”
Pollan also draws parallels between consciousness hygiene and practices like meditation and psychedelic experiences. Both involve drawing a line around your consciousness, creating a space where you can explore your thoughts without external interference. Meditation, in particular, is a powerful tool for reclaiming mental sovereignty. By putting down our phones and disconnecting from technological media, we can reconnect with the richness of our inner lives.
The idea of consciousness as a “precious realm” is central to Pollan’s message. He urges us to treat it with the same care and reverence that religions have traditionally reserved for the soul. While consciousness and the soul are not the same—consciousness is tied to our lived experience and may vanish at death—the attention we pay to our inner lives is crucial. “The care of the soul,” Pollan notes, “is a lot like consciousness hygiene.”
As we navigate an increasingly complex and technologically driven world, Pollan’s call for consciousness hygiene is both timely and urgent. It’s a reminder to pause, reflect, and protect the most intimate part of ourselves. In a world where our minds are constantly under siege, reclaiming our consciousness may be the most radical act of self-care we can undertake.
