‘Pink Noise’ Could Be Harming Your Sleep Quality, Study Warns : ScienceAlert

Pink Noise Sleep Aid: New Study Suggests Popular Sleep Hack Might Be Doing More Harm Than Good

For years, pink noise has been touted as the ultimate sleep hack — a soothing, waterfall-like sound designed to mask disruptive noises and lull you into deeper rest. From smartphone apps to dedicated white noise machines, pink noise has become a go-to tool for millions seeking better sleep. But new research from the University of Pennsylvania is now challenging that assumption, suggesting that pink noise might actually be sabotaging your sleep quality rather than improving it.

In a groundbreaking study published in the journal Sleep, researchers recruited 25 healthy adults aged 21 to 41 with no history of sleep disorders or noise-based sleep aids. Over seven consecutive nights in a sleep lab, participants were exposed to different auditory conditions — including environmental noise, pink noise alone, and combinations of both — while their sleep stages, cognitive performance, and cardiovascular health were closely monitored.

The findings were surprising. On nights with environmental noise alone, participants lost an average of 23 minutes of deep sleep (N3 stage), a critical phase for physical restoration and memory consolidation. Even more concerning, exposure to pink noise at 50 decibels was linked to nearly 19 fewer minutes of REM sleep per night — the stage vital for emotional regulation, learning, and brain development.

But the most alarming result came when pink noise was combined with environmental noise. In this scenario, both REM and deep sleep were significantly reduced, and participants spent more time awake during the night compared to quiet control nights. This suggests that pink noise, rather than masking disruptive sounds, may actually amplify their negative effects on sleep architecture.

There was one bright spot: participants who wore earplugs didn’t show the same sleep disruptions, even on noisy nights. This points to earplugs as a potentially safer alternative for blocking out unwanted sounds without interfering with natural sleep cycles.

Lead researcher Mathias Basner warns that these findings are particularly concerning for children, who spend more time in REM sleep and whose brains are still developing. “REM sleep is important for memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and brain development, so our findings suggest that playing pink noise and other types of broadband noise during sleep could be harmful,” Basner said.

While the study’s small sample size means more research is needed — especially in vulnerable populations like infants, toddlers, and long-term users — the results raise serious questions about the widespread use of pink noise as a sleep aid. With millions relying on these sounds nightly, the potential public health implications are significant.

So, before you hit play on that pink noise playlist tonight, you might want to reconsider. Your brain — and your sleep — could be better off in silence.
