Prof Lynne Taylor and Dr Sarah O’Keeffe awarded 2026 St Patrick’s Day Medal
Irish Innovators Honored with Prestigious Research Ireland St Patrick’s Day Medal
In a dazzling ceremony held in Washington DC, two extraordinary Irish-American leaders in pharmaceutical research and development were bestowed with the coveted Research Ireland St Patrick’s Day Medal—an accolade that celebrates the profound impact of the Irish diaspora on global science and innovation.
This year’s honorees, Prof Lynne Taylor and Dr Sarah O’Keeffe, represent the pinnacle of excellence in drug formulation and pharmaceutical R&D, respectively. Their groundbreaking contributions not only push the boundaries of medicine but also fortify the longstanding bonds between Ireland and the United States.
Prof Lynne Taylor: A Trailblazer in Drug Formulation Science
Prof Lynne Taylor, the Retter Distinguished Professor of Pharmacy at Purdue University, is a global authority whose pioneering work in drug formulation science has revolutionized the delivery of life-saving treatments. Her research has laid the technological foundation for therapies targeting diseases such as cancer and hepatitis C—conditions that once seemed insurmountable.
An Irish citizen, Taylor has been a tireless advocate for Ireland’s pharmaceutical sector, leveraging her expertise through advisory roles with the Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals and collaborations with leading Irish universities. Her influence extends beyond the lab; she serves as editor-in-chief of Molecular Pharmaceutics, one of the field’s most respected journals.
But perhaps her most enduring legacy is her commitment to empowering women in STEM. Through dedicated mentorship, Taylor has cultivated a formidable talent pipeline, with many of her former mentees now holding prominent positions in academia and industry worldwide.
Upon receiving the medal, Taylor expressed deep gratitude: “It is a great honor to receive this award from Ireland’s research and innovation agency. For many years, I have championed Irish research and supported scientists at every stage of their development, across Ireland and globally. Whether serving as a mentor, adviser, collaborator, or guest speaker, these interactions with Irish scientists have been deeply rewarding. It is a privilege to continue playing a role in fostering greater connectivity and knowledge exchange between the United States and Ireland, and I am confident that the long-standing bonds between our two countries will grow even stronger into the future.”
Dr Sarah O’Keeffe: Architect of Global Pharmaceutical Innovation
Dr Sarah O’Keeffe, Group Vice-President for Product Research and Development at Eli Lilly, is one of Ireland’s most senior leaders in global pharmaceutical R&D. Based in Indianapolis, she oversees a team of more than 1,000 scientists and engineers dedicated to translating discovery molecules into medicines that reach patients worldwide.
O’Keeffe’s career is marked by a series of landmark achievements. She played a pivotal role in advancing manufacturing capabilities at Eli Lilly’s Kinsale site in Ireland, which earned the facility the IPSE Global Facility of the Year Award for Innovation in 2017. More recently, she has been central to the development of the $4.5 billion Lilly Medicine Foundry, a state-of-the-art hub for pharmaceutical innovation.
Among her most notable contributions is her work on orforglipron, an investigational drug candidate recognized by Time magazine for its potential global health impact in managing diabetes and obesity. This breakthrough underscores her ability to lead teams through complex, high-stakes research that directly benefits millions of patients.
Reflecting on her award, O’Keeffe said: “I am delighted and proud to receive this recognition from Research Ireland. I would like, firstly, to acknowledge UCC for being the launchpad for my career in industry. I’d also like to thank all my Lilly colleagues in Ireland, United States, and internationally over the last two decades, for their extraordinary commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence. Pharmaceutical research endeavors are a team pursuit, and collective passion and perseverance through times of challenge and often, failure is how progress and success happens. It has been a pleasure to have shared my journey to date with such talented colleagues who have the patient front and center in all that they do.”
A Celebration of Irish Excellence and Transatlantic Collaboration
The medals were presented by Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD, who hailed both recipients as exemplars of scientific leadership and international partnership. “Today, we honour two outstanding scientific leaders whose achievements exemplify the very best of our global research community,” Martin said. “Prof Taylor and Dr O’Keeffe demonstrate how members of the Irish diaspora, working at the highest levels in the United States, are helping to shape the future of medicine and strengthen international partnerships. Their respective work has enhanced Ireland’s reputation as a leader in research and innovation, and reflects both the deep and enduring ties between Ireland and the US, and our shared commitment to scientific excellence. I am delighted to recognise their leadership and achievements here today, and to celebrate the impact they continue to make on behalf of Ireland.”
The Research Ireland St Patrick’s Day Medal has a storied history, with past recipients including luminaries such as Dr Eamonn Keogh, Stripe founders John and Patrick Collison, and Dr Ann Kelleher. Each year, the award shines a spotlight on individuals whose work not only advances their fields but also elevates Ireland’s standing on the world stage.
As the global pharmaceutical industry faces unprecedented challenges—from emerging diseases to the need for more sustainable manufacturing—the contributions of leaders like Taylor and O’Keeffe are more vital than ever. Their stories are a testament to the power of curiosity, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to improving human health.
