Quick Share removes always-on ‘Everyone’ mode on Android

Google’s Quick Share Ditches “Everyone” Mode in iOS-Like Privacy Shift

Google’s Quick Share, Android’s answer to Apple’s AirDrop, is undergoing a significant privacy overhaul as the company quietly removes its always-on “Everyone” sharing mode. This change, first spotted by Android Authority and confirmed on our Pixel 10 test device, brings Quick Share’s privacy settings more in line with iOS, potentially reducing unwanted file sharing attempts while maintaining convenience for users.

The Change Explained

Since its introduction, Quick Share has offered four sharing modes: “Your devices,” “Contacts,” “Everyone,” and “Everyone for 10 minutes,” plus an option to disable visibility entirely. The “Everyone” mode allowed any nearby Android device to discover and send files without restrictions, similar to AirDrop’s now-removed constant “Everyone” setting on iOS.

Our testing reveals that “Everyone” has vanished from the sharing menu on our Pixel 10, leaving only “Your devices,” “Contacts,” and “Everyone for 10 minutes.” The latter option maintains the convenience of temporary open sharing for 10 minutes, after which the device returns to its previous privacy setting.

Privacy-First Approach

This change represents a significant shift in Google’s approach to file sharing. By removing the always-on “Everyone” mode, the company addresses a long-standing security concern. The constant visibility option, while convenient, was susceptible to abuse – anyone within range could attempt to send files without restriction.

The remaining “Everyone for 10 minutes” option provides a balanced solution. Users can temporarily enable broader sharing when needed, such as during group collaborations or social gatherings, then automatically revert to more restrictive settings. This approach mirrors Apple’s current AirDrop implementation, which also requires users to enable “Everyone” mode temporarily.

Technical Details and Rollout

The change appears to be server-side rather than tied to a specific app update. While Android Authority noted the change on devices running Google Play Services beta version 26.06.31, our Pixel 10 is on the stable track (version 26.04.38), suggesting Google is pushing this change universally.

This server-side implementation means the change can roll out rapidly without requiring users to update their apps or operating system. Google likely intends to deploy this modification across all Android devices supporting Quick Share, potentially affecting millions of users worldwide.

User Experience Impact

For most users, this change will be subtle but meaningful. The primary difference is that devices will no longer appear discoverable to all nearby Android devices by default. Instead, users must actively choose to make their device temporarily visible to everyone.

The “Your devices” and “Contacts” options remain unchanged, continuing to provide secure, selective sharing. These modes ensure that only trusted devices – those signed into the same Google account or listed as contacts – can discover and share files.

Industry Context

This move aligns Android more closely with iOS in terms of privacy philosophy. Apple removed AirDrop’s constant “Everyone” mode in iOS 16.1.1 after security researchers demonstrated potential for abuse. Google’s decision suggests the company is taking similar privacy concerns seriously, even if it means slightly reducing convenience.

The timing is interesting, coming as Android continues to mature as a platform. Quick Share has been available since 2020 and has gained widespread adoption. With the feature firmly established, Google appears comfortable making this privacy-focused adjustment.

Security Implications

The removal of always-on “Everyone” mode addresses several security concerns:

Reduced attack surface: Devices are less visible to potential malicious actors scanning for vulnerable targets.

Prevention of unwanted file transfers: Users can no longer receive unsolicited files from strangers.

Better control over discoverability: Users maintain explicit control over when their device is visible to others.

Alignment with security best practices: The change follows industry trends toward more restrictive default settings.

User Reactions and Adaptation

Early feedback suggests users are adapting well to the change. The temporary “Everyone for 10 minutes” option provides flexibility while the more restrictive default settings enhance security. Most users who frequently used “Everyone” mode can simply enable the 10-minute option when needed.

Power users who relied on constant discoverability may need to adjust their workflow, but the trade-off appears worthwhile for the enhanced privacy and security.

Future Implications

This change may signal broader privacy improvements coming to Android. Google has increasingly emphasized privacy features in recent years, from enhanced app permissions to more granular location sharing controls. Quick Share’s evolution suggests the company is willing to prioritize security even when it means changing long-standing features.

The move also highlights the ongoing convergence of Android and iOS features, though each platform maintains its distinct approach to implementation and user experience.
