Samsung already nuked the only cool thing about the Galaxy S26’s AI
Samsung Removes “Hey Plex” from Galaxy S26 — Here’s Why It Matters
Samsung’s latest flagship phones just lost a key feature, but the change could signal a bigger shift in how AI assistants work on Galaxy devices.
When Samsung launched the Galaxy S26 series earlier this year, it proudly showcased its expanding AI ecosystem. Alongside Bixby and Google Gemini, the company introduced a third AI assistant: Perplexity AI. A standout feature of this integration was the hands-free wake phrase “Hey Plex,” which let users activate the assistant instantly—even with the screen off.
But now, that feature has quietly disappeared. According to SamMobile, after the first Galaxy S26 software update, the “Hey Plex detection” toggle vanished from the Perplexity app’s settings. Without it, the voice command no longer works, forcing users to open Perplexity manually or use the side button.
So what happened?
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed on X that the wake phrase isn’t gone for good—it’s just changing. Instead of “Hey Plex,” the command will soon be “Hey Perplexity.” This means the feature is temporarily disabled while Samsung and Perplexity roll out the new wake word.
Neither company has explained the reasoning in detail, but there are a few possibilities. The shorter “Hey Plex” might have overlapped with other brands or products using the same name. Switching to the full “Perplexity” could help avoid confusion and strengthen the assistant’s identity.
This isn’t just a minor tweak—it reflects the messy, behind-the-scenes reality of AI development. Wake words change, features get pulled, and rollouts rarely go perfectly. But it also shows Samsung’s commitment to a multi-assistant strategy rather than relying on just one AI.
With the Galaxy S26, users can choose between assistants depending on their needs: Gemini for Google-powered queries, Bixby for device controls, or Perplexity for web-based research and detailed answers. Perplexity is also deeply integrated into Samsung’s ecosystem, working with apps like Samsung Notes, Calendar, and Reminders to pull or save information seamlessly.
For now, Galaxy S26 owners will need to launch Perplexity manually. But once “Hey Perplexity” goes live, voice access should return—potentially stronger and clearer than before.
This episode is a reminder that even on cutting-edge devices, AI features are still evolving. What seems like a setback today could be a smarter, more polished experience tomorrow.
