Samsung Hits Pause on Galaxy S25 Edge and TriFold, Keeps S Pen in Ultra

In a recent sit-down with Bloomberg, Samsung’s COO for Mobile Experience, Won-Joon Choi, revealed that the tech giant is taking a “momentary step back” from two ambitious projects: the Galaxy S25 Edge and the Galaxy Z TriFold. The move comes after the Edge model underperformed in the market, with sales falling well below expectations and production cuts following just a month after launch.

Choi explained that while the S25 Edge was meant to rival Apple’s iPhone Air with its ultra-thin 5.8mm profile, the device’s compromises—like a smaller 3,900mAh battery and limited processing power—didn’t resonate with consumers. “We haven’t made a decision when to have a next one,” Choi said, “but it’s still being considered.”

The Galaxy Z TriFold, Samsung’s first double-folding experiment, also drew Choi’s cautious remarks. He admitted it “was not the project I wanted to do,” citing the complexity of designing custom components for such a niche form factor. While some users crave a larger screen for media, Choi hinted Samsung may refocus on its traditional book-style Z Fold lineup instead.

On a brighter note, the S Pen is here to stay—at least in the Galaxy S Ultra series. Samsung is working on “more advanced technology” to reduce the so-called “penalty” of including the stylus, likely referring to the added thickness it traditionally brings. “We’re working on a more advanced technology,” Choi said, suggesting the next Ultra could be slimmer without sacrificing the beloved S Pen.

The Edge’s failure is a stark contrast to the warm reception of the Z Fold 7 in Korea, which smashed sales records. Analysts say Samsung’s gamble on extreme thinness didn’t pay off, especially when the device lacked the “wow” factor beyond its slim profile.

With the Galaxy S26 lineup on the horizon, all eyes are on whether Samsung will double down on proven designs or take another swing at innovation—just maybe with a bit more balance this time.
