The Mental Health Coalition, a consortium of organizations dedicated to destigmatizing mental health issues, announced Tuesday the launch of the Safe Online Standards (S.O.S.) program. This pioneering rating system will evaluate social media platforms across multiple critical dimensions, including safety protocols, platform design, content moderation practices, and the availability of mental health resources.

An independent panel of global experts will conduct the assessments, bringing unprecedented transparency to an industry that has long operated with minimal external oversight. The coalition’s approach represents a significant shift from voluntary self-regulation to third-party accountability.

The first wave of companies to undergo evaluation includes some of the most influential players in the digital ecosystem: TikTok, Snap, Meta (parent company of Facebook and Instagram), Discord, YouTube, Pinterest, Roblox, and Twitch. This diverse group encompasses platforms popular with different age demographics and serving various content formats, from short-form videos to gaming communities.

Meta’s Antigone Davis, Vice President and Global Head of Safety, framed the initiative as a positive step forward. “These standards provide the public with a meaningful way to evaluate platform protections and hold companies accountable — and we look forward to more tech companies signing up for the assessments,” Davis stated in the company’s official response.

The rating system employs a color-coded approach designed for immediate comprehension by users, parents, and policymakers alike. Platforms demonstrating exemplary safety measures will receive a coveted blue shield badge, signaling their commitment to reducing harmful content and maintaining clear, enforceable rules. Those falling short of established benchmarks will receive a red rating, indicating failures in reliably blocking harmful content or establishing adequate safety protocols. Intermediate ratings in other colors will indicate partial protection or pending evaluations.
