ChatGPT’s Hidden Features: How to Customize Your AI Experience for Maximum Productivity

When OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022, it was a simple chat interface that felt revolutionary. Fast forward to today, and ChatGPT has evolved into a sophisticated AI platform with deep customization options that most users never explore. Whether you’re a casual user or power professional, these hidden settings can transform your daily AI interactions from basic Q&A to a personalized productivity powerhouse.

Appearance Customization: Make ChatGPT Yours

The first thing you’ll notice when diving into ChatGPT’s settings is the ability to customize its appearance. Located under the General tab in Settings, you can toggle between dark and light modes—I prefer setting mine to “System” so it automatically matches my Mac’s appearance settings.

But here’s the real game-changer: accent colors. By default, ChatGPT uses a standard blue highlight, but you can change this to any color that suits your workflow. I’ve switched mine to green, making my prompts visually distinct from the AI’s responses. This small visual cue dramatically improves readability during long sessions.

Model Selection: Choose Your AI Brain

For Plus users and above, one of the most powerful features is the ability to select which AI model powers your conversations. Enable “Show Additional Models” in the General tab, and you’ll unlock a dropdown menu in the upper-left corner of your chat window.

When OpenAI releases a new model, I typically stick with the previous version initially. For instance, when GPT-5.3 launches, I’ll temporarily switch to the legacy GPT-5.2 model. This gives me time to test the new version without disrupting my workflow. You can also choose between “Auto” mode, where ChatGPT selects the optimal model, or “Thinking” mode for complex, nuanced questions that benefit from deeper reasoning.

Personality Tuning: Make ChatGPT Your Digital Companion

OpenAI offers personality customization options that range from “Friendly” to “Quirky”—though I personally keep mine neutral. The base style settings let you adjust how ChatGPT communicates, while the “Warm” option controls how personable it feels.

My wife, who uses ChatGPT Plus, prefers the “Friendly” base style with “More” warmth, finding it supportive during conversations. The Headers & Lists option is particularly useful—you can choose whether ChatGPT presents information in paragraph form or as structured lists, depending on your preference.

Memory Management: Context That Actually Works

ChatGPT’s memory feature has come a long way. Under the Personalization tab, you’ll find comprehensive memory controls that let you manage how ChatGPT retains context across conversations.

You can enable or disable memory for saved memories, browser history (if you use ChatGPT Atlas), and chat history. I’ve found the chat history memory particularly hit-or-miss—sometimes it remembers things I’d rather forget, other times it forgets conversations I wanted it to recall. The “Manage” button lets you manually delete specific memories, which is invaluable when ChatGPT starts associating you with random topics you only researched once for reference.

Conversation Pinning: Never Lose Track Again

This feature has become indispensable in my daily workflow. You can pin up to three conversations to the top of your conversation list, making it easy to return to ongoing projects.

Currently, I have three pinned conversations: one about local AI coding models (Goose Ollama Qwen3), another about tax information (it’s that time of year), and a third exploring welding—though my wife isn’t thrilled about that last one, so it might not last long.

Advertising Controls: The New Reality

In a move that surprised many users, OpenAI recently introduced in-app advertising for free and Go plan users. You can access these controls through the Ad Controls tab in Settings.

While I haven’t personally seen ads yet (they’re still rolling out), the controls allow you to manage personalization based on your interests and past chats. You can clear your advertising history entirely or choose whether ads should be personalized using your conversation context. Even with personalization turned off, ChatGPT’s documentation notes that ads will still be tailored to your current conversation thread.

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT has evolved from a simple chatbot into a highly customizable AI platform. Whether you’re adjusting appearance settings, selecting specific models, tuning personality, managing memory, or controlling advertising, these features can dramatically improve your daily experience.

The key is experimentation—what works for me might not work for you. Plus users have access to the most comprehensive customization options, but even free users can benefit from exploring these settings.
