Super Mario Galaxy Movie's Anya Taylor-Joy Barfed The First Time She Voiced Peach

Anya Taylor-Joy Recalls Throwing Up During First Super Mario Galaxy Movie Voice Session

Anya Taylor-Joy is back as the voice of Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but the actress recently opened up about a rather unpleasant first experience in the recording booth. During a candid appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Taylor-Joy revealed that her initial voice acting session for The Super Mario Bros. Movie was so physically demanding that she ended up vomiting.

“It’s super fun,” Taylor-Joy told Meyers, laughing at the memory. “But I will say the first time I ever did a session, I did not realize how taxing it would be because you’re yelling continuously the whole time. I think the first time I ever did it, I threw up. I’m pretty sure, like, I drank so much water and I was like, ‘Gotta do it.'”

The actress went on to explain that voice acting for an animated film, especially one as energetic as a Mario movie, requires far more physical exertion than many might expect. The process involves not just delivering lines, but also performing “efforts”—the grunts, gasps, and battle cries that bring animated characters to life. These efforts, Taylor-Joy noted, are recorded separately and can be surprisingly exhausting.

“You kind of visit yourself back and you think, ‘God, I hope no one ever sees this,’ because they do film them,” she added, referencing the behind-the-scenes footage captured during these sessions. The physical nature of the work, combined with the need to project energy and emotion without the benefit of physical movement or visual cues, can be a real shock to the system for newcomers to voice acting.

Despite the rocky start, Taylor-Joy has clearly embraced the role of Princess Peach. Her performance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie was widely praised, and fans are eager to hear her reprise the character in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film, which is expected to draw inspiration from the beloved Super Mario Galaxy video games, promises to be another high-energy adventure—something Taylor-Joy is now well-prepared for, even if her first day on the job left her feeling a bit green.

For aspiring voice actors, Taylor-Joy’s story serves as both a warning and an inspiration: the job might look glamorous from the outside, but it can be surprisingly grueling. Still, as she noted, the end result is “super fun,” and the chance to bring a beloved character like Princess Peach to life is worth a little (or a lot of) effort.
