Tactical Breach Wizards sold ‘twice as well’ as Suspicious Developments’ previous games, but more importantly, it failed catastrophically to lose an IGF award: ‘All we can say is we’re sorry, and we’ll try to do worse’
Tactical Breach Wizards: From Critical Acclaim to Accidental Award Wins—What’s Next for the Indie Hit?
In the ever-evolving world of indie gaming, few titles have managed to capture the hearts of players and critics alike quite like Tactical Breach Wizards. This fantasy turn-based tactical strategy game, which blends the thrill of tactical breaches with the whimsy of wizards, has been a standout success since its launch in 2024. But as the team at Suspicious Developments recently revealed, the game’s journey has been anything but ordinary—complete with accidental award wins, record-breaking sales, and a bold leap into their next project.
A Game That Broke the Mold
Tactical Breach Wizards is a game that defies expectations. Developed by Suspicious Developments, the studio behind the beloved Gunpoint, this title takes the tactical strategy genre to new heights by introducing a team of Navy Seers and Necro Medics who specialize in busting down doors and casting spells. The result? A game that’s as strategic as it is charming, with a unique blend of humor, creativity, and depth that has resonated with players worldwide.
Since its release, Tactical Breach Wizards has not only achieved commercial success but has also garnered near-universal critical acclaim. The game’s revenue reportedly doubled that of any of the studio’s previous titles, allowing Suspicious Developments to remain fully independent and self-funded. “We are in the increasingly rare position of remaining fully independent, self-funded, and safe for the amount of time it takes to make a videogame when you’re very slow at making videogames,” the studio wrote in their latest newsletter.
A History of “Losing” Awards
But here’s where things get interesting. Suspicious Developments has a long-standing tradition of being nominated for—but ultimately losing—a healthy number of awards. This streak continued with Tactical Breach Wizards, as the studio proudly “lost” the Golden Joysticks, two BAFTAs, a DICE award, and even a Hugo Award. “An especially great honour given how few games have ever successfully lost a Hugo,” the studio quipped.
However, not everything went according to plan. In a surprising twist, Tactical Breach Wizards won the IGF Award for Excellence in Design—a rare misstep for a studio that prides itself on its award-losing prowess. “We’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened, but long story short, we won it,” the studio admitted, apologizing for the “flagrantly victorious error.” Their solution? To try and do worse next time.
What’s Next for Suspicious Developments?
With the success of Tactical Breach Wizards under their belt, Suspicious Developments is already hard at work on their next project. In fact, this is the studio’s second new game since the launch of Tactical Breach Wizards, as their first attempt didn’t quite work out. “We started something new! And then we scrapped it! Now we’ve started a different something new!” the studio announced.
While they’re not ready to reveal the concept or title of their upcoming game, Suspicious Developments has shared a glimpse of what’s to come in a recent video. The studio is determined to avoid the darker tone that characterized much of Tactical Breach Wizards’ development, with lead developer Tom Francis discussing their prototyping work in detail.
Why Tactical Breach Wizards Matters
Tactical Breach Wizards is more than just a game—it’s a testament to the power of creativity, independence, and a willingness to take risks. In an industry often dominated by big-budget titles, this indie gem proves that innovation and originality can still thrive. Its success is a reminder that games don’t need to conform to traditional molds to resonate with players.
As Suspicious Developments looks to the future, one thing is clear: they’re not afraid to push boundaries, embrace their quirks, and, yes, even lose awards. For fans of the studio and the genre, the journey is just as exciting as the destination.
