The “Tillyverse” Is Coming: AI Studio Xicoia Plans a Full Digital Universe for Its Controversial AI Actress

The world of entertainment is bracing for a seismic shift as Xicoia, the AI talent studio behind the polarizing AI-generated actress Tilly Norwood, announces plans to launch a sprawling digital universe known as the “Tillyverse” later this year. This bold move signals not just an expansion of a single AI character, but the dawn of a new era in entertainment—one where artificial intelligence, not human performers, takes center stage.

Tilly Norwood first burst onto the scene last summer, sparking immediate controversy and backlash from actors, unions, and fans alike. Created by British production company Big Talk Productions, Tilly was marketed as a fully AI-generated actress, complete with a backstory, personality, and social media presence. Her debut ignited fierce debate over the ethics of using AI to replicate human creativity, especially in an industry already grappling with the implications of automation.

Now, Xicoia is doubling down. The studio’s latest announcement reveals ambitious plans to expand Tilly’s narrative into a full-fledged “Tillyverse”—a digital ecosystem where Tilly’s “compelling narrative arc” will unfold across multiple platforms. According to CEO Eline Van der Velden, the Tillyverse will encompass everything from Tilly’s humor and daily life to her career choices and interactions with fans. The goal is to create a living, breathing digital universe that fans can explore and engage with, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

But Tilly won’t be alone. Xicoia is also working on introducing a host of new AI characters to populate the Tillyverse, each with their own stories and personalities. This move positions Xicoia at the forefront of what it calls the “rapidly emerging AI entertainment economy,” where digital talent is created, developed, and monetized at scale.

To lead this ambitious expansion, Xicoia has brought on Mark Whelan, formerly of Amazon Prime Video, as its first major hire. At Prime, Whelan spearheaded social strategy for popular European shows like Clarkson’s Farm and The Grand Tour. Now, he’ll oversee the creation of bespoke AI talent commissioned by third parties, further cementing Xicoia’s role as a pioneer in the AI entertainment space.

“A few short months after Tilly was revealed to the world, this appointment now signals a period of rapid acceleration,” Xicoia said in a press release. “Xicoia isn’t just experimenting with AI talent—it’s building IP at scale and redefining how talent is created, developed, and experienced in the AI era.”

The controversy surrounding Tilly Norwood has not subsided since her debut. The actors’ union SAG-AFTRA issued a strong statement condemning the use of AI to replicate human performers without permission or compensation, calling Tilly “a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers.” Despite interest from talent agencies, Tilly remains unsigned, though creator Eline Van der Velden has hinted that negotiations are ongoing.

The timing of Xicoia’s announcement is particularly significant. SAG-AFTRA is currently in the midst of renegotiating its contract, with AI use in film and television once again emerging as a major sticking point. The union’s previous contract, signed after the historic Hollywood strikes of 2023, included provisions aimed at protecting actors from unauthorized AI replication. With the current contract set to expire on June 30, the expansion of the Tillyverse could become a flashpoint in the negotiations—not just for SAG-AFTRA, but for the entire entertainment industry.

The rapid advancement of AI technology since 2023 has only accelerated these tensions. Tools like Google’s Nano Banana Pro, ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0, and OpenAI’s Sora have pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in video and image generation. Earlier this month, an entirely AI-generated short film nearly secured a national theatrical run through AMC before the chain backed away amid public criticism. These developments underscore the growing pressure on unions and studios to address the role of AI in creative industries.

As the Writers Guild of America and the Directors Guild prepare to renegotiate their own contracts in the coming months, the expansion of the Tillyverse could serve as a bellwether for how the industry navigates the AI revolution.
