The anonymous social app that thinks it can work in Saudi Arabia
Fizz Explodes in Saudi Arabia, Reaching #1 on App Store Charts Within 48 Hours and Signaling Bold Global Ambitions
In a stunning and unexpected turn of events, Fizz—the anonymous social networking app born on American college campuses—has taken Saudi Arabia by storm, rocketing to the top of the App Store charts in less than two days and sending shockwaves through the tech world. The app, founded by Stanford dropouts Teddy Solomon and Ashton Cofer in 2022, has now amassed over 1 million messages in the country since its quiet mid-March launch, signaling not just viral growth but a strategic leap beyond its college-focused origins.
From Campus Cult to Global Contender
Fizz began as a niche player in the crowded social media space, catering to college students craving anonymity and candid conversation. After raising an impressive $40 million and launching on 700 campuses, the founders set their sights higher. Enter Fizz Feed—a bold new feature that opens the platform to non-students via location-based communities, positioning Fizz as a Reddit-like hub for hyperlocal, anonymous discourse.
But no one saw Saudi Arabia coming.
When Solomon attended a tech conference in Dubai, he sensed untapped potential in the Middle East. Soon after, Fizz marketing analyst Michael Fonseca relocated to Saudi Arabia, immersing himself in the culture and forging crucial local connections. The result? A launch so successful it caught even the founders off guard.
“We’ve always known that our big goal is to be a generational social product, rather than a college social app, and now we’re finally executing on it,” Solomon told TechCrunch. This marks the first time Fizz has publicly discussed its international ambitions—and the numbers speak volumes.
Saudi Arabia: A Social Media Powerhouse in the Making
Saudi Arabia is in the midst of a dramatic transformation. Under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, the kingdom is rapidly diversifying away from oil dependency, embracing modernization, and investing heavily in Western technology. Women now legally drive, the entertainment scene is booming, and global tech giants like Google and Uber have secured major investments.
Social media is at the heart of this cultural shift. Snapchat, WhatsApp, TikTok, and now Fizz are dominating the digital landscape. “Business is booming. The social scene and social landscape is booming,” Solomon enthused. “Saudi Arabia is jumping right now.”
And Fizz is riding that wave. Currently holding the #1 spot in the news category on the App Store, the app’s rapid adoption underscores a broader appetite for anonymous, community-driven platforms in the region.
The Tightrope Walk: Free Speech vs. Local Laws
Yet, Fizz’s success in Saudi Arabia comes with significant risks. The kingdom remains an absolute monarchy, notorious for suppressing dissent and cracking down on free speech. In 2024, women’s rights activist Manahel al-Otaibi was sentenced to 11 years in prison for “terrorist offenses” after tweeting about women’s rights and posting Snapchat photos without a traditional abaya, according to Amnesty International.
For Fizz, this presents a precarious challenge: how to foster open, anonymous conversation while navigating a legal environment that could demand content takedowns—or worse, lead to arrests based on user posts.
Solomon admits there’s no clear playbook. “The answer is, [we will] cross that bridge when we get there,” he said. “We have a lot of confidence in our guidelines. We are moderating very strictly and in a way that is satisfying people in the region and making sure that we’re abiding by the rules of the region and rules of the country.”
To that end, Fizz has invested heavily in Arabic natural language processing tools and onboarded “hundreds” of volunteer moderators from the Saudi community. The company uses a hybrid approach—AI-driven moderation paired with human oversight—to navigate the nuances of local culture and legal constraints.
No Strings Attached—Yet
Despite its explosive growth, Fizz insists it has not received investment from any Saudi entities and has not communicated with government officials. The company’s expansion appears to be driven by grassroots demand and a genuine belief in the platform’s potential to serve as a safe, anonymous space for Saudis to connect and share.
“There’s a lot of care for their community,” Solomon said. “There’s a lot of pride in their country, a lot of pride in the city that they live in, and they like the platform. They want to keep the platform safe, and they take a lot of honor in doing so.”
The Road Ahead: Fizz’s Global Gambit
Saudi Arabia is just the beginning. With its successful debut, Fizz is signaling its intent to become a truly global, generational social product. The question now is whether it can replicate this success in other international markets—and how it will handle the complex political and cultural landscapes it encounters along the way.
For now, Fizz’s Saudi Arabian ascent is a testament to the power of timing, cultural adaptation, and the universal human desire for anonymous connection. As the app continues to evolve, all eyes will be on how it balances growth with responsibility in an increasingly connected—and scrutinized—world.
