AI Health Advice: The Double-Edged Sword Reshaping Patient-Doctor Relationships
In an era where information is just a click away, people are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for health advice—a trend that’s both empowering and potentially dangerous. As trust in traditional healthcare institutions continues declining, with federal agencies like the CDC and FDA seeing 5-7% drops in public confidence over the past year, AI health tools have emerged as convenient alternatives that are always available and free to use.

Tech giants aren’t ignoring this shift—Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic have all developed health-oriented large language models for healthcare professionals, while rumors suggest Apple may be developing its own health AI. This partnership is becoming more challenging as patients arrive at appointments less willing to disclose their AI research but more certain about their self-diagnoses. Dr. Mieses Malchuk notes that even in medicine, there’s rarely 100% certainty, and this new dynamic creates tension in the patient-doctor relationship.
The risks are real. A recent study published in Nature found that ChatGPT undertriaged over half of emergency cases, directing patients to 24-48 hour evaluations rather than emergency departments. The authors concluded that these findings “reveal missed high-risk emergencies and inconsistent activation of crisis safeguards, raising safety concerns that warrant prospective validation before consumer-scale deployment.”
Dr. Mieses Malchuk worries that AI tools like ChatGPT could give people a false sense of security, convincing them they don’t need to see a doctor or get conditions examined. “That could be a missed opportunity to diagnose something early,” she warns.
Despite these concerns, AI does have valuable applications for patients. It excels at providing general wellness advice—creating meal plans for newly diagnosed celiac disease patients, suggesting appropriate foods to eat and avoid, or generating customized workout regimens. These applications make AI a powerful wellness tool for non-medical users.
The growing mistrust in the medical system is particularly troubling to Dr. Mieses Malchuk. “We take this oath to first do no harm, so the idea that these other resources are giving patients this false sense of confidence and making them think they can completely bypass seeing a physician—it’s an unfortunate step point.”
As AI continues reshaping healthcare, the key message from medical professionals is clear: use these tools for information and wellness planning, but always partner with qualified healthcare providers for diagnosis and treatment decisions.
