The Next Generation of Modular, Repairable Laptops May Have More Than One Screen

Lenovo’s Modular ThinkBook Concept: A Promising Step Toward Laptop Customization—With a Few Proprietary Hiccups

Lenovo is making waves in the laptop world with its latest ThinkBook X1 Carbon, unveiled with extra fanfare at CES 2026. While the laptop boasts impressive repairability, it’s the company’s new Modular AI Concept that’s truly turning heads. This ambitious design promises a level of modularity that even rivals Framework’s current offerings, though it’s held back by Lenovo’s reliance on proprietary components.

A Modular Marvel Inspired by the Best

At first glance, the Modular AI Concept looks like a standard 14-inch ThinkBook laptop. But remove the keyboard, and you’ll discover a platform ready to accept a secondary screen. This feature immediately brings to mind the Asus Zenbook Duo, with its dual-screen functionality. The modularity doesn’t stop there—this secondary screen can also attach to the rear of the laptop lid, allowing users to mirror their screen and share their work with others.

But wait, there’s more! The secondary screen can also function as an external display thanks to an integrated kickstand. While it’s not Bluetooth-enabled (requiring a USB-C connection), the real excitement comes from the laptop’s swappable ports. Taking a page from Framework’s playbook, two of the laptop’s four ports are removable and can be exchanged for other types of ports, such as an SD card slot for photographers.

The Proprietary Problem

As I delved deeper into the concept, my initial excitement began to wane. Unlike the Framework 13, which uses a USB-C system for its removable ports, the ThinkBook concept relies on a pin connection. This design choice significantly limits the laptop’s customizability for DIY enthusiasts who enjoy creating their own modules.

Despite this drawback, there’s still much to like about the ThinkPad concept. The dual-screen functionality and modular design make it an enticing option for business users and creators alike. However, durability concerns arose when the pin section behind the monitor became unglued during testing, requiring a replacement.

A 3D Screen to Rule Them All?

As if the Modular AI Concept wasn’t enough, Lenovo also showcased its Yoga Book Pro 3D Concept. This massive, dual-screen laptop features a top screen built for glasses-free 3D viewing, while the bottom touchscreen works with a stylus for 3D modeling. The laptop is powered by an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 mobile GPU.

The 3D screen technology uses an attached webcam to track users’ eyes, creating a stereoscopic effect that results in a perceived 3D image. This technology has been seen in Samsung’s Odyssey 3D gaming monitor and is now being adapted for creators and 3D modelers.

The Verdict

Lenovo’s Modular AI Concept and Yoga Book Pro 3D Concept are ambitious steps toward a more customizable and versatile laptop experience. While the Modular AI Concept falls short due to its proprietary pin connection, it still offers a glimpse into the future of laptop design. The Yoga Book Pro 3D Concept, on the other hand, showcases the potential of 3D screens for creators, though its widespread adoption remains uncertain.

As with any proof of concept, these designs are not finalized products. Lenovo’s focus on proprietary components may dampen enthusiasm for some, but the ideas behind these concepts are undeniably exciting. If Lenovo can embrace a more open approach to modularity and add a few key features (like a TrackPoint “nipple” on the keyboard), the ThinkPad Modular could become the ultimate ultraportable laptop.
