There’s Not Enough Money in the World for Trump’s Golden Dome
Trump’s $175 Billion Golden Dome Missile Defense Plan Could Cost Up to $6 Trillion — and Still Fail Spectacularly
In a stunning revelation that has sent shockwaves through Washington and beyond, a new analysis suggests that Donald Trump’s ambitious “Golden Dome” missile defense system could end up costing taxpayers an astronomical $6 trillion — and still fail to deliver on its promise of national security.
The Golden Dome, unveiled with much fanfare and a glowing map of the United States covered by a golden shield, was initially projected to cost $175 billion. However, a detailed report by Taxpayers for Common Sense, drawing on expert sources including the conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI), paints a far grimmer picture. According to their projections, the total cost over the next 20 years could balloon to $3.6 trillion, or $4.4 trillion when adjusted for inflation.
To put this into perspective, the total amount of physical U.S. currency in circulation — including money outside the Treasury and Federal Reserve — is just $2.43 trillion. In other words, even if every dollar bill in the country were pooled together, it wouldn’t be enough to fund the Golden Dome.
The AEI’s analysis goes even further, suggesting that if the U.S. Space Force were to field 85,400 space-based interceptors (SBIs) — essentially orbital counter-ordinance weapons — the cost could soar to $6 trillion. This assumes a highly optimistic success rate, where only a handful of SBIs are needed to neutralize each adversarial rocket.
But here’s the catch: the American Physical Society Panel on Public Affairs estimates that knocking out just one adversarial rocket could require hundreds of SBIs, and next-generation solid-state intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) might need as many as 1,600 interceptors each. With China and Russia possessing around 750 ICBMs between them, the U.S. could need up to 1.2 million SBIs to ensure security — not to mention the additional challenge posed by cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons.
Despite the staggering costs, the Golden Dome’s effectiveness remains highly questionable. In over 40 years of missile defense research, technicians have only successfully intercepted one mock warhead in a test. As Gabe Murphy, a policy analyst at Taxpayers for Common Sense, told the Federal News Network, “If Golden Dome could guarantee our security for nuclear weapons, one could argue that these astronomical costs would be worth it, but from all these viability problems and the history of failed attempts, it’s very clear that it won’t.”
The Golden Dome has been criticized as a boondoggle from the start, with experts warning that the technology simply isn’t there yet to make it work. Yet, with Trump’s penchant for grand, attention-grabbing projects, the Golden Dome continues to move forward — at a cost that could dwarf even the most expensive military programs in history.
As the debate over the Golden Dome rages on, one thing is clear: the American taxpayer is being asked to foot the bill for a project that may never deliver on its promises. Whether it’s a matter of national security or political theater, the Golden Dome is shaping up to be one of the most controversial and costly endeavors in U.S. history.
