Uber Acquires SpotHero in Bold Move to Dominate Parking and Autonomous Mobility Markets

In a strategic expansion that underscores its ambitions beyond ride-hailing, Uber has announced the acquisition of SpotHero, a leading US-based parking reservation platform, for an undisclosed sum. The deal marks a significant pivot for the tech giant as it seeks to integrate parking solutions directly into its app, offering users a seamless experience for both driving and parking needs.

Founded in 2011 by Mark Lawrence and Jeremy Smith, SpotHero has grown into one of North America’s most trusted digital parking networks, connecting drivers to over 13,000 garages, lots, and valet services across 400 cities in the US and Canada. With this acquisition, Uber aims to leverage SpotHero’s extensive infrastructure to enhance its ecosystem, making parking reservations a native feature of the Uber app.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the strategic importance of the move, stating, “We’ve built Uber around giving people more ways to get around without needing a car. But for the moments when people do choose to drive, SpotHero on the Uber app will make the experience easier than ever, and bring more people into the Uber ecosystem.” This integration is expected to cater to a broader audience, including commuters, event-goers, and travelers seeking convenient parking solutions at airports and venues.

SpotHero CEO Mark Lawrence echoed the sentiment, highlighting the synergy between the two companies. “We’ve spent 15 years building SpotHero into the most trusted, high-performing digital parking network in North America. Joining forces with Uber will allow us to bring that experience to millions more drivers and make parking a natural part of the Uber platform.”

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions, with the deal expected to finalize in the first half of 2026. This move comes on the heels of Uber’s announcement earlier in February to roll out autonomous vehicles (AVs) in major cities worldwide, including London, Madrid, Munich, Hong Kong, and several US cities. Uber’s CEO has described AVs as a “multitrillion-dollar opportunity,” positioning the company to become the largest facilitator of autonomous vehicle trips globally.

By combining SpotHero’s parking expertise with its autonomous vehicle initiatives, Uber is laying the groundwork for a future where mobility solutions are seamlessly integrated, from driving to parking to autonomous travel. This dual strategy not only diversifies Uber’s offerings but also strengthens its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving tech and transportation landscape.

As Uber continues to innovate and expand its reach, this acquisition signals a bold step toward redefining urban mobility. With SpotHero’s robust network and Uber’s global platform, the future of parking and transportation is set to become more connected, efficient, and user-friendly than ever before.
