The Agentic Revolution: Planner and Reflection Agents

Building on this foundation, LexisNexis has developed what Chen describes as “agentic graphs” and autonomous agents capable of planning and executing complex multi-step tasks. Two particularly innovative agents stand out: the planner agent and the reflection agent.

The planner agent represents a significant advancement in how AI handles complex legal queries. When a user poses a multifaceted legal question, the planner agent breaks it down into multiple sub-questions, creating a structured approach to comprehensive research. The reflection agent takes a different but equally innovative approach, focusing on transactional document drafting. Rather than focusing solely on accuracy—which Chen acknowledges can never reach 100% in complex domains like law—the team has developed more than half a dozen “sub metrics” to measure what they call “usefulness.”

These metrics encompass several critical factors: authority, citation accuracy, hallucination rates, and importantly, “comprehensiveness.” This last metric is designed to evaluate whether a gen AI response fully addresses all aspects of a user’s legal questions. “So it’s not just about relevancy,” Chen emphasizes. “Completeness speaks directly to legal reliability.”

This focus on completeness reflects a deep understanding of legal practice realities. A user might ask a question requiring an answer covering five distinct legal considerations. An AI response that accurately addresses only three of these, while relevant, is incomplete and potentially insufficient. In legal contexts, such partial answers can be misleading and pose real-life risks.

The Human-AI Collaboration Model

Despite the advanced automation and autonomous capabilities being developed, Chen is clear that the goal is not to eliminate human involvement but to enhance it. “I see the future as a deeper collaboration between humans and AI,” he states.
