WotC says there are no plans for a Harry Potter Magic set, ‘The Magic Multiverse has its own school of Magic at Strixhaven’
Hasbro’s New Harry Potter Partnership Sparks Magic: The Gathering Fan Backlash
In a move that has sent shockwaves through both the toy and gaming industries, Hasbro has announced a multi-year licensing partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to expand the Harry Potter merchandise empire. The announcement, made via Hasbro’s official newsroom, promises an avalanche of new products including dolls, role-play items, action figures, collectibles, interactive plush toys, board games, and more—all set to be revealed later this year.
This development has left many Magic: The Gathering players deeply concerned, particularly given the game’s recent trend of high-profile crossover sets. The beloved trading card game has already ventured into licensed territory with the critically acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender set, which launched earlier this year, and is preparing for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set just three weeks away.
While some of these crossover sets have been warmly received by the community—with many middle-aged players jokingly claiming they’re buying Avatar cards “for my kids” (sure, Jan)—the prospect of a Harry Potter-themed Magic set has triggered significant unease. The controversy stems from the fact that the Harry Potter franchise is closely associated with author J.K. Rowling, who has become a leading voice in anti-trans rhetoric in recent years.
Responding to these concerns on Reddit, the Wizards of the Coast community team attempted to quell fears by stating: “The Magic Multiverse has its own school of Magic at Strixhaven with plenty of secrets still to explore. Our Universes Beyond roadmap currently doesn’t have us visiting any others.”
This statement provides some reassurance to anxious fans. Strixhaven, introduced in a Magic set released in 2021, serves as the game’s own magical university. The institution has since expanded into a Dungeons & Dragons supplement and is set to feature in an upcoming Magic set called “Secrets of Strixhaven,” scheduled for release in April. Additionally, a young adult novel titled “Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos” by acclaimed author Seanan McGuire is on the horizon.
Beyond avoiding association with a controversial figure, Strixhaven also sidesteps the uncomfortable elements of child endangerment that permeate the Harry Potter series. While the early books may seem like a satire of British boarding schools, many readers have noted that the series gradually transforms into what some critics describe as a “weird celebration” of these institutions.
Looking ahead, the Magic: The Gathering release schedule remains packed with exciting content. Sandwiched between the Secrets of Strixhaven set and October’s Reality Fracture will be sets based on The Hobbit and Star Trek, ensuring that players have plenty to look forward to without venturing into potentially contentious territory.
It’s worth noting that while a Harry Potter-themed Magic set appears unlikely, the franchise isn’t entirely absent from the collectible card game world. The license for Harry Potter trading cards was recently acquired by Upper Deck, though this deal is strictly for collectibles rather than gameplay cards.
As the debate continues to unfold within the Magic community, one thing is certain: the intersection of popular culture, gaming, and social issues has never been more complex. With fans increasingly vocal about their values and the companies they support, the pressure on major brands like Hasbro to navigate these waters carefully has never been greater.
Whether this latest partnership will prove to be a masterstroke of merchandising or a PR nightmare remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that in today’s interconnected world, even the most magical of franchises can’t escape the harsh light of public scrutiny.
