Xiaomi Leica Leitzphone 17 Ultra: When Photography Royalty Meets Smartphone Innovation

The tech world is buzzing with excitement as Xiaomi and Leica have taken their already impressive partnership to the next level. At this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Xiaomi unveiled the Leitzphone 17 Ultra, marking a historic moment: the first time Leica has allowed its iconic red dot logo to appear on a smartphone manufactured by another company. This isn’t just a branding exercise—it’s a statement of trust and confidence from one of photography’s most revered names.

A Partnership That Just Got Personal

Xiaomi and Leica have been working together since 2022, producing flagship cameras that have consistently impressed reviewers and consumers alike. But until now, Leica’s branding remained conspicuously absent from the hardware itself. The Leitzphone 17 Ultra changes that dynamic entirely, featuring the distinctive Leica red dot prominently displayed on the device’s back panel.

The timing is particularly interesting. Just weeks before MWC, Xiaomi had already launched the 17 Ultra in China on December 25th, 2025, followed by a Leica Edition exclusive to that market. Now, with the international launch, Leica is making its boldest move yet—creating a dedicated Leitzphone brand that exists outside Japan for the first time, where Sharp had previously held the exclusive rights to produce Leica-branded phones.

Design That Speaks Volumes

The Leitzphone ‘t just a rebadged Xiaomi 17 Ultra—though it’s certainly close. The device features a slightly glossy black finish that catches the light differently than the standard model, knurled aluminum-alloy edges that provide superior grip, and that unmistakable Leica red dot logo that photographers have trusted for over a century.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that the Leica logo isn’t simply printed on the surface—it’s raised metal, giving it a premium tactile quality that immediately communicates the device’s pedigree. The phone ships with a curated selection of Leica-branded accessories, including a faux leather case complete with a lens cap (a charming nod to traditional camera gear), a microfiber cleaning cloth, and a bright red wrist strap that adds a pop of color while providing practical security.

The Rotating Camera Ring: Innovation or Gimmick?

The Leitzphone’s most distinctive hardware feature is undoubtedly its rotatable camera ring. The edge of the camera island can be twisted around with a satisfying haptic feedback that mimics the feel of mechanical camera controls. It’s an idea that sounds brilliant on paper—bringing the tactile satisfaction of traditional photography to the smartphone experience.

However, real-world usage tells a different story. The camera island, while large by phone standards, would be considered tiny on a dedicated camera. Its flush positioning against the phone’s body makes it awkward to grip and manipulate comfortably. While the rotating ring can control zoom in the camera app or cycle through exposure settings and filters, most users—including this reviewer—find themselves defaulting to the on-screen controls, which prove quicker and more intuitive in practice.

The rotating ring serves as an excellent fidget spinner and certainly adds to the phone’s premium feel, but its practical utility remains questionable. It’s the kind of feature that sounds innovative during a product launch but may struggle to find its place in everyday use.

Camera Excellence: The Real Star of the Show

Despite the rotating ring’s limitations, the Leitzphone’s camera system is nothing short of exceptional. The headline feature is a telephoto camera with continuous optical zoom, utilizing a single 1/1.4-inch type 200-megapixel sensor paired with a Leica APO zoom lens covering 3.2-4.3x magnification (equivalent to 75-100mm). The aperture adjusts from f/2.39-2.96 as you zoom, providing impressive versatility.

The photos produced by this system are genuinely outstanding. The large sensor delivers natural bokeh effects that smartphone cameras typically struggle to achieve, along with macro support at just 30cm minimum distance. The camera handles challenging lighting conditions with remarkable competence, producing good results even in dim environments—though it did struggle with extreme highlights on particularly bright days.

The main camera features a large 1-inch-type sensor with the same 50-megapixel resolution as the ultrawide and selfie cameras. It’s one of the first phones to include a LOFIC (lateral overflow integration capacitor) sensor, which significantly expands the dynamic range for highlights. This technology has enabled some of the most dramatic skyline shots I’ve ever captured on a smartphone, along with excellent nighttime performance in scenes with bright lights.

Xiaomi offers two distinct shooting modes through the Leica partnership: Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant. The Authentic mode, which I found myself using almost exclusively, delivers filmic qualities that preserve more of the highlights and shadows than typical smartphone processing, avoiding the flattened appearance that excessive HDR can create.

Software Customization with Leica Flair

The Leitzphone runs Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 based on Android 16, but the interface has been thoughtfully customized to reflect Leica’s design philosophy. Dedicated Leica widgets include photo galleries and a golden-hour timer that helps photographers capture the perfect light. Custom monochrome app icons for popular apps from Xiaomi and third-party developers look striking when you first power on the device, though they become less cohesive once mixed with the colorful icons from other applications you’ll inevitably install.

The camera app itself has been redesigned with Leica fonts and red accent colors replacing Xiaomi’s usual yellow palette. A new Leica Essential shooting mode offers two camera simulations: a color recreation of the M9 and a monochromatic interpretation of the M3, providing photographers with creative options that pay homage to Leica’s legendary rangefinder cameras.

The Leitzphone also includes the option to enable C2PA content credentials on every shot, addressing growing concerns about AI-generated imagery and providing verifiable proof of authenticity for your photographs.

Flagship Performance Across the Board

Beyond its camera capabilities, the Leitzphone delivers flagship-level performance in every category. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with 16GB of RAM (a luxurious specification in today’s market) and 1TB of storage, with a 512GB option available on the standard 17 Ultra.

The 6.9-inch 1-120Hz LTPO OLED display is bright, vibrant, and responsive, while IP68 protection ensures the device can withstand dust and water exposure. Perhaps most impressively, the 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery cell provides exceptional endurance. Even with the phone’s demanding specifications and large display, I’ve consistently achieved nearly two days of use between charges, though with minimal power remaining at the end of that period.

Charging is equally impressive, with 90W PPS wired charging and 50W wireless topping up the battery rapidly. However, third-party wireless charging is limited to slower Qi speeds, and there’s no support for the newer magnetic Qi2 standard.

The Price of Prestige

Here’s where the Leitzphone faces its biggest challenge: value proposition. The device starts at £1,299 / €1,499 (approximately $1,750) for the 512GB configuration, with the Leica version commanding an additional £400 / €700 premium. That’s a substantial price increase for what amounts to a more expensive version of an already premium device.

The question becomes: are the Leica branding, rotating camera ring, and software customizations worth that premium? For photography enthusiasts who have long admired Leica’s heritage and want that iconic red dot on their device, the answer might be yes. For everyone else, the standard Xiaomi 17 Ultra offers nearly identical performance and capabilities at a significantly lower price point.

The Verdict: A Camera-First Phone That Delivers

After two weeks of intensive use, the Leitzphone 17 Ultra has proven itself to be my favorite phone of 2026 so far. The camera system is genuinely exceptional, offering versatility and image quality that rivals dedicated cameras in many situations. The battery life is outstanding, the performance is flagship-level, and the overall build quality justifies the premium positioning.

However, recommending this specific device comes with caveats. The standard Xiaomi 17 Ultra shares most of these strengths while costing significantly less. The Leitzphone’s additional features—while nice—don’t quite justify the substantial price premium for most buyers.

For Leica enthusiasts, professional photographers who want a capable secondary camera, or those who simply appreciate the prestige and design elements that Leica brings to the table, the Leitzphone is an excellent choice. For everyone else, the regular 17 Ultra represents a smarter value proposition without sacrificing the core experience that makes this phone special.
