X’s latest Community Notes experiment allows AI to write the first draft
X Tests AI-Powered “Collaborative Notes” to Speed Up Fact-Checking
In a bold move to modernize its content moderation approach, X (formerly Twitter) is rolling out a new AI-driven feature designed to accelerate the creation of Community Notes. The platform is experimenting with what it calls “collaborative notes,” a system where human contributors can request AI-generated notes to help provide context or fact-checks on posts more quickly.
This isn’t X’s first foray into AI-assisted fact-checking. Last year, the company launched a pilot program allowing developers to create dedicated AI note writers. According to X’s Keith Coleman, who oversees Community Notes, these AI writers have been “prolific,” with one AI contributor publishing over 1,000 notes that were rated as helpful by other contributors.
The new collaborative notes feature takes this concept further by creating a more streamlined workflow. When an existing Community Note contributor requests a note on a post, the system now automatically initiates the creation of a Collaborative Note. Contributors can then rate the AI-generated note or suggest improvements. The system is designed to evolve over time, incorporating feedback to make notes increasingly helpful and accurate.
“Collaborative Notes can update over time as suggestions and ratings come in,” X explains. “When considering an update, the system reviews new input from contributors to make the note as helpful as possible, then decides whether the new version is a meaningful improvement.”
For this experiment, X is leveraging its in-house AI, Grok, to power the collaborative notes. This aligns with how many X users already interact with Grok, often invoking it in threads with prompts like “@grok is this true?” Coleman notes that if the collaborative notes feature proves successful, the platform may extend this suggestion-feedback loop to the broader AI note writer API.
The timing of this update is significant. Community Notes has frequently faced criticism for being too slow in addressing misinformation, particularly during breaking news events or viral controversies. By integrating AI into the process, X aims to reduce lag time while maintaining the human oversight that has been central to the Community Notes system’s credibility.
There’s also a potential upside for AI development itself. Coleman points out that the update provides “a new way to make models smarter in the process (continuous learning from community feedback).” This creates a virtuous cycle where human judgment helps refine AI outputs, which in turn can assist more contributors more quickly.
However, the experiment isn’t without risks. X’s AI, Grok, has had its share of high-profile missteps, including instances of “losing touch with reality” and generating inappropriate content. The platform will need to carefully balance speed with accuracy to maintain user trust in the Community Notes system.
Currently, only Community Note Contributors with “top writer” status can initiate collaborative notes, though X plans to expand availability over time. This gradual rollout suggests the company is taking a measured approach to implementation.
The move represents a significant evolution in how social media platforms handle misinformation. Rather than relying solely on human moderators or fully automated systems, X is attempting to create a hybrid model that combines the speed of AI with the judgment of human contributors. Whether this approach can successfully address the challenges of real-time fact-checking while avoiding the pitfalls of AI-generated content remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a fascinating development in the ongoing battle against online misinformation.
