You’ve had Skate Story, now get ready for Skate Style, a ‘next-gen skateboarding game’ that lets you customise your character’s animations
Skate Style Promises Next-Gen Realism and Animation Editor for Ultimate Customization
The skating game renaissance of recent years has delivered an unexpected but welcome surge of titles that cater to both hardcore skaters and casual fans alike. Vicarious Visions’ masterful remaster of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 kicked off this revival, paving the way for a diverse range of skate-inspired experiences. From the ultra-realistic Session: Skate Sim to the surreal brilliance of Skate Story, and EA’s online-focused Skate occupying the middle ground, the genre has never been more vibrant.
Now, a new challenger has entered the half-pipe—and we apologize to all skaters for the cliché. Skate Style, developed by Zellah Games, is positioning itself as a “next-gen skateboarding game” that leans heavily into realism and physics-driven trick mechanics. The developers promise a focus on authenticity, with a unique twist: an in-game animation editor that lets players fine-tune every aspect of their skater’s movements.
Unprecedented Customization Meets Physics-Based Gameplay
What sets Skate Style apart from its competitors is its extensive customization options. Beyond the usual skater and board personalization, the game includes a robust animation editor. This tool allows players to adjust variables like body movement, foot placement, and timing, giving them unparalleled control over their skating style. Combined with a physics-based trick system where your character’s feet can actually “catch” the board, Skate Style aims to deliver a deeply immersive and authentic experience.
Real-World Locations and Legendary Spots
The game features two maps based on iconic real-world locations. The first is Barcelona’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), a mecca for street skaters known for its modern concrete architecture, surrounding squares, and hidden alleys. The second is Prague’s Stalin Plaza, described by the developers as a “legendary flatground spot” that has become a pilgrimage site for skaters worldwide. A dedicated skate park is also showcased in the trailer, likely serving as a training ground for players before they tackle the European locales.
A Crowded Market with High Stakes
Skate Style enters a competitive market where recent releases have had mixed receptions. EA’s Skate was criticized for feeling like it was “made by people in suits rather than people with skateboards,” according to PC Gamer’s Kara Phillips. Meanwhile, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 was praised for its nostalgic appeal but criticized for implementing time limits on every level, which some players found restrictive.
The standout exception is Skate Story, which Lincoln Carpenter lauded for its narrative-driven approach and stunning audiovisual presentation. “It culminates in a stunning closing sequence that’s on an altogether different tier of audiovisual and presentational ambition,” Carpenter wrote in his review. “In my last hour, skateboarding became a cosmic force with such biblical-scale intensity that the game as I knew it up until that point started to buckle around it.”
Demo Available Now
While no release date has been announced, Skate Style has already released a demo on Steam, giving players a chance to experience its unique blend of realism and customization firsthand. With its innovative animation editor and focus on authentic physics, Skate Style could carve out a niche in the crowded skate game market.
