When Apple reveals the new iPhone software, iOS 18, at this year’s WWDC event today, iPhone users will have a pressing question: will their phone be supported by the new OS, so they can access all the new features? Here’s the answer.
Apple is about to announce iOS 18. But which iPhones will work with it?
Every year, a new list of iPhones is announced which are compatible with the next-generation software. With this year’s iOS 18 claimed to be the “biggest-ever” update for the iPhone, a lot of people will want their handset to be compatible.
Well, there’s good news. According to MacRumors, the list of compatible iPhones for iOS 18 is identical to the list for iOS 17. In other words, if your iPhone can run iOS 17, it’ll run iOS 18. And, of course, it will work with this fall’s iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
MacRumors says that’s the information, “According to a post on X today from a private account with a proven track record of sharing build numbers for upcoming iOS updates.”
This situation is not without precedent, but it certainly doesn’t happen every year. Sometime the iPhones from one year drop off entirely, sometimes more. But if the post is correct, then every iPhone released since September 2018 will be supported with software that will be in place until summer 2025.
In the last few days, Apple confirmed that the current iPhone 15 Pro Max will receive a minimum of five years of security updates. This level of compatibility will beat that comfortably.
Of course, it doesn’t mean that the iPhone Xr will be as powerful as the iPhone 15 Pro, for instance. Not all software features are available on all handsets because of different hardware capabilities, such as processor, cameras and so on.
And if the 2018 class of iPhones had slipped off the list, they wouldn’t have stopped working, merely they’d have stayed on iOS 17 forever.
For the avoidance of doubt, here’s the complete list of iPhones which will be supported by iOS 18, it’s claimed. The list runs from the oldest to the newest, as follows:
iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Additionally, both the second-generation and third-generation of iPhone SE, released in 2020 and 2022 respectively.
