Mobile Internet data consumption has been growing to a greater extent than the number of mobile phones that accessed the Internet, this as a result of the greater demand for this type of service. Thus, during the first quarter of 2024, the average monthly mobile data traffic carried by mobile phone in this period was 17.94 gigabytes (GB), which represented a jump of 18.82% compared to the same period of the previous year, reported the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL).

According to the analysis prepared by the Directorate of Regulatory Policies and Competition (DPRC) of OSIPTEL, the number of mobile phones that accessed mobile internet represented 73.5% of the total active mobile lines at the end of March 2024.

MOBILE DATA TRAFFIC INCREASED 19.55% COMPARED TO THE SAME PERIOD IN 2023

During the first quarter of 2024, demand for connectivity continued its sustained growth. In this period, mobile data traffic sent from mobile phones reached 1.62 million terabytes (TB), 19.55% more than what was registered in the first quarter of the previous year.

MORE THAN 75% OF DATA WAS TRANSFERRED ON POST-PAID AND CONTROL MOBILE PHONES

On the other hand, mobile data traffic carried on mobile phones with contract service (which includes postpaid and control lines) during the first quarter of 2024 registered a growth of 21.97%, compared to the same period in 2023, when totaling 1.23 million TB. Meanwhile, in the prepaid segment, mobile data traffic grew to 0.39 million TB, which represented an increase of 12.56% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Thus, in the period analyzed, 75.82% of the mobile data traffic was registered on mobile phones under the contract modality, while the prepaid segment accumulated 24.18%.

CLARO LEADS PARTICIPATION OF PHONES THAT ACCESS MOBILE INTERNET

As of March 2024, Claro is the company that registers the highest market share (34.90%) in terms of the number of mobile phones that accessed mobile internet, followed by Movistar with 25.18%, Entel (21.47%), Bitel (18.30%), and other companies (0.14%).

Compared to March 2023, Claro and Bitel increased their market share in terms of the number of mobile phones that accessed mobile internet (+1.18 and +0.82 percentage points, respectively). Meanwhile, Movistar and Entel reduced their participation compared to the same period of the previous year (-1.4 and -0.63 percentage points, respectively).

CLARO AND BITEL INCREASE THEIR PARTICIPATION IN MOBILE DATA TRAFFIC

In the first quarter of 2024, the companies Claro and Bitel saw their participation in mobile data traffic sent from mobile phones increase by 1.82 and 0.72 percentage points, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the participation of Movistar and Entel fell by 2.39 and 0.13 percentage points, respectively.

With this, Claro maintains the leadership in market share, in terms of mobile internet data traffic as of the first quarter of 2024 with 38.62%, followed by Entel (23.85%), Movistar (21.46%) and Bitel (16.04%).
