State of Decay 3 Resurfaces, Nearly Four Years After Its Initial Announcement – Xbox Games Showcase 2024

Nearly four years after its initial announcement, Undead Labs has provided a long-awaited update to State of Decay 3 with a new trailer…though there’s still no release date.

State of Decay 3’s latest trailer finally showed off a little bit of gameplay for the next installment in the MMO zombie franchise, showing a lot of brutal zombie hacking and slashing underlying an emotional monologue.

In an Xbox Wire blog post, we also learned that Undead Labs has teamed up with Fallout: New Vegas, Grounded, and Avowed developer Obsidian on what Undead Labs calls a “shared world feature,” which aims to provide a more flexible online cooperate experience for State of Decay 3 players.

Undead Labs announced State of Decay 3 at an Xbox Games Showcase held on July 2020, revealing a grueling cinematic trailer. However, no additional details were provided beyond the confirmation that a new State of Decay game was in development. In 2022, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty revealed that State of Decay 3 will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and that Gears of War developer The Coalition would assist Undead Labs in development.

Before today’s announcement, State of Decay 3’s lack of development updates alarmed both the series’ fans and Xbox owners looking forward to the project. In 2022, Kotaku reported that the project was facing troubled development, with its sources claiming that the game had been in development since 2018 but was announced too early. Additionally, one of the factors cited as an issue in State of Decay 3’s development was mismanagement. Notably, no release date was provided for State of Decay 3 today.

In our review of State of Decay 2, IGN wrote: “State of Decay 2’s survival RPG struggle against zombies is fun thanks to strong combat and fear of permanent death but repetitive and buggy, especially in co-op.”
