Albemarle County Police Highlight Internet Safety and Fraud Prevention


ALBEMARLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Detective Michael Schneider from the Albemarle County Police Department discussed rising online scams and Internet safety. “We see scams are happening more and more,” Schneider noted, highlighting threats from pop-up ads, emails, phone calls, and texts.

He warned about common scams, including fraudulent money transfer requests and copycat websites, and stressed, “A police officer will never ask you for money in any form.”

Schneider urged families to educate and monitor older adults’ online activity and suggested the “NetSmartz” series for children’s online safety. He reminded the community, “We all have a responsibility to be good digital citizens.”
