LG Display also gets approval to supply OLED for iPhone 16 Pro Max

Display maker already secured OK for iPhone 16 Pro

LG Display has received approval from customer Apple to supply OLED panels for iPhone 16 Pro Max, TheElec has learned.

This is ahead of Samsung Display, which has never happened before, sources said.

Last month, LG Display and Samsung Display both received approval to supply OLED panels for iPhone 16 Pro.

While LG Display’s has lower OLED production capacity than Samsung Display, the timely approval from Apple will allow it to narrow its gap with its compatriot.

The timely approval for both Pro and Pro Max also contrasts with LG Display’s performance as of last year, where it almost always lost its chance to supply the panels for the initial stock of iPhones.

Last year, because of this delay, rival Samsung Display secured the majority of the initial orders for the iPhone 15 Pro Models, increasing its margin considerably.

LG Display is manufacturing OLED panels for iPhones at its E6-1, E6-2, and E6-3 lines.

The company is also supplying OLED panels for Apple’s iPad Pros through its E6-4 line. LG Display is seeing more orders than it expected, so it will be difficult for it to convert E6-4 to manufacture OLED panels for iPhones even if Apple’s OLED panel orders for the iPhone 16 Pro models increase.

LG Display’s recent timely approvals is also likely due to Apple’s desire to weaken Samsung Display’s position as the dominant OLED panel supplier. The OLED panels for iPhone 16 has little changes to iPhone 15.

However, Samsung Display will still be supplying OLED panels for the other iPhone 16 models, while LG Display will be only supplying for the Pro models.
