Laredo City Council urges refunding of Affordable Connectivity Program

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – A resolution passed during this week’s city council meeting to encourage the federal government to refund a program aiming to connect residents to the internet.

Congress ended funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program in May, affecting more than 36,000 people in Laredo.

One Laredoan presented his research as a Google policy fellow to the city council on the value of internet access.

“What I found in my research as a fellow was that it was very clear that when communities lack access to broadband internet, they also lose access to educational opportunities, economic opportunities, their ability to access key health services,” Oscar Lopez shares. “Ultimately, my research showed that in a digital world, and in a digital age, we can not see internet access as a luxury, it’s a necessity.”

Another motion was passed to explore hotspot opportunities and initiatives around the city to help households that do not have internet access.
