AG Raúl Torrez Announces Launch Of Internet Safety Webpage – Los Alamos Reporter

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez has announced the launch of the New Mexico Department of Justice’s Internet Safety webpage. The page features an “experience form” where parents and teens can share their past or current issues with social media platforms. These submitted experiences will help inform a broader campaign set to be announced later this summer.  

As the NMDOJ continues to work tirelessly to hold social media companies accountable for failing to protect kids while on their platforms, the Internet Safety page serves as a supplemental resource for parents and teens. Specifically, the page offers parents and teens extensive resources, including social media privacy guides and information on “Take It Down,” a free service to stop the online sharing of explicit images or videos of minors. 

“As technology continues to advance and more of our daily lives are shared online, it’s important that we take steps to protect our children, our families, and our communities,” said Attorney General Raúl Torrez. “The Internet Safety Page was created to be a valuable resource for everyone, and the New Mexico Department of Justice is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the digital world.” 

With a growing backlog of at least 2.5 million flagged underage user accounts on Meta Platforms alone, it is clear that parents and children are in need of immediate protection while on certain social media applications. “The danger is very real, especially for our children. Every day on Meta, for example, an estimated 100,000 children are victims of online sexual harassment,” AG Torrez added. (Case: D-101-CV-2023-02838; State of New Mexico v. Meta Platforms Inc, et.
