Fallen tree knocks out power, city internet in Wilkes County

WASHINGTON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Crews worked to restore a city internet and power outage after a large tree fell on powerlines in Wilkes County.

Wilkes County Emergency Services officials say there was a power outage on the southside in various areas of Robert Toombs Avenue.

A large tree being down on Gordon Street near Marshall Street caused the outage, officials say.

The area has been closed up to Depot Street, officials urge drivers to please use other routes until the scene is clear.

City workers were onsite as of 8:45 a.m. on Monday and have also enlisted workers from Elberton for assistance, according to officials.

The estimated time for power to be out is around half a day, officials say.

Items in your refrigerator and freezer will be okay, as long as you don’t open and close the door multiple times.

Officials have also received reports of city internet outages in various locations.

Officials asked the public to not call 911 as this is “all being worked on aggressively!”
