The First Descendant’s New Luna Hero Looks And Sounds A Bit Too Familiar

While The First Descendant has obviously taken a lot of concepts from other games like Warframe, sometimes that goes a bit too far like the discovery it used a number of almost near-identical UI icons to Destiny 2, which were later changed.

Now? The First Descendant is about to introduce its first new hero since launch, Luna, and uh, well, we’re having a similar issue here.

Luna is a music-based hero that supplies your team with various buffs. And if that made you think of Overwatch’s Lucio, well, look at the weapon they both share.

But wait, there’s more! The new Luna skin that Nexon showed off yesterday takes us into a different hero shooter, namely Marvel Rivals, where both her name, and now her hair, are essentially identical to Luna Snow, a K-pop idol with ice powers who debuted in another game a while ago and has made her way to comics.

So we ask a question we’ve asked previously, rip-off or homage? We’ve been through this before where there is a First Descendant sniper rifle called “Different Dream” which very much channels the aesthetic of Destiny 2 weapon “Sleeper Simulant,” and you could view that as a tribute.

Here? I mean Blizzard does not own the concept of a music-based hero with a music-based speaker gun. I also don’t think she’s a healer, though she will provide other team buffs and is clearly a support character like he was.

As for Luna Snow, the hairstyle in question here is an optional cosmetic, not her default, so that could be meant as a tribute to the South Korean Marvel hero (Nexon is a Korean company). And uh, well, their names are the same. No ice powers though.

I actually think that generally speaking, The First Descendant does a good job of not having its characters mirror ones in other games too directly either in terms of design or concept. At least nothing quite like this. This seems a little close for comfort to both of these in a way where say, we’re not calling Viessa Emma Frost or something. Other characters like Bunny or Valby or Freyna I’d argue stand alone pretty well.

Will anything change here? This time, I doubt it. Nothing is “stolen” per se, it’s just…very close to these other things. Luna releases August 2.
