A new study looks at how too much internet usage can affect the brains of teenagers.

The study, published in Plos Mental Health, found internet addiction in young people can affect their development and behavior.

As for what an internet addiction is, the study defined it as someone being unable to resist the urge to use the internet, causing a strain on their mental well-being, along with their academic, social or professional lives.

The study found children and teens with internet addictions had disrupted signals between parts of the brain that control attention and memory.

According to the study, these symptoms can alter mood, impulse, tolerance and even create conflict.

As researchers look at the impact overuse of the internet has on young people, the U.S. Senate is working on two bipartisan bills that have a goal of protecting kids online.

Last week, the U.S. Senate advanced the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act and Kids Online Safety Act.

“Predators can exploit or target kids and for kids who struggle with mental health, social media can magnify their anguish,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Here’s what The Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act would do:

  • Stop online companies from getting personal information from users 13-16 years old without their permission
  • Prohibits advertisement that targets children
  • Gives parents and children an option to eliminate personal information online
  • Would create a Youth Marketing and Privacy Division at the Federal Trade Commission

The Kids Online Safety Act would do the following:

  • Create safety standards for online platforms
  • Requires platforms to have the most protective settings as a default for kids
  • Lets minors protect their information
  • Disable certain features
  • Lets kids opt-out of algorithm recommendations

The acts could pass as soon as next week.
